Re: Engine split

Thanks Benny - that worked like a charm!

Flywheel is now off.

Now back to clutch. It seems to be "star" shaped bolt (I don't know the exact name for this type of bolt head). What is the type and what is the size I need to buy that I can open the clutch disc wheel?

Re: Shock Springs

Changing only the spring of the rear shock.

That sounds really good.

That would possibly solve half of the hand-numbing-problem. After that you wouldn't need to squeeze the bars like a gorilla with constipation to stay on the saddle on a bumpy road.

Re: Black Storm rising

Yesterday I took the cylinder heads to tooling. Valves need to be cleaned and new seals installed. I assume this means that I need to adjust the valve clearance once the engine is almost back in one piece. Well, that will be later problem. The workshop promised them to be ready "this month"...

Engine split

I have started to split the engine to pieces. And it seems to be more difficult than I remembered. :? I can get most of the bolts open, but It seems that there are some bolts behind the clutch and that needs to be completely removed. So series of questions: 1. Can I remove the clutch bottom (where t...

Re: "Intelligent" Cars

Most of the new cars already have a black box. It records lots of things what is happening for the car. It is just not used for anything else but factory's own research. It is not even used for finding what happened during the car crash. Only if that is especially demanded from the car manufacturer ...

Re: Race cans - the science??

I actually think the difference is not really the race cans, but the carburetors. So if you change the cans without adjusting your carbs, you get better performance with the cans which better fit to your carburetor adjustment. So no science there. I would say that you have done extremely well, if yo...

Re: what was your first big bike??

First BIG bike... That was legendary Honda CX500C. A really decent bike. With a V2 engine :) - Sideways - And it weighted a ton. Great and reliable bike (as Honda can be). The cam chain tensioner broke, but that didn't matter. The bike went on and on for 25 000km without even noticing that the cam c...

Re: Cylinders and pistons

After some more research (and good comments from here) it seems that I need to strip the whole engine. Darn. :( The honing itself is not anything difficult and I could easily do that by myself. But when I called to a workshop, the honing work would be about same as buying the honing tool. Not worth ...

Re: Cylinders and pistons

scott02464: Is that double negative? :D Benny: Could you explain what you meant that I only lose half a bore? If I understood correctly, that means that if I only hone the cylinders then I am only half way to the oversized piston? Of course, there is a problem with iron dust when doing the honing, b...

Cylinders and pistons

I already started the discussion on the pimp-my-ride section, but since this is more on technical side, I rather move these bits here and keep the other section for the work updates. The main problem is that I am lazy (aren't we all? ). So I don't want to split the whole engine and tear it i...

Re: Black Storm rising

Well here we go! I actually finally started the work. Not much really. I cleaned a table to work on and got the cylinder heads out from the boxes to see the damages. From the piston you can see the muck between the piston rings and piston head. So no wonder compression was gone. http://imageshack.us...

Re: Religion ??

Well, there is always a possibility to became an pastafarian and worship the great Spaghetti Monster.

Heck. At least they have a stripper factory and beer volcanoes!

I'd choose that any day over harps and togas and boring hymns all day for eternity.

Re: Black Storm rising

Yep. Winter is here - the first sub zero night temperature was last weekend. (not that I have been able to ride in 2 months, but nevertheless) So it is time to do some winter maintenance. Nothing major, just complete rebuild of the engine because of the mystical "lack-off-compression". So ...

Re: Seals & gaskets

Excellent. The original gaskets are so expensive that even that I don't get the full set, I still win by buying Varadero gasket set.

Thanks. This should mean that starting next month my Pimp-my-vtr thread will start to get updates from the complete rebuild.

Seals & gaskets

Winter is coming and now it is time to start putting the engine back together. All good advices are welcome, all bad advices are laughed at but welcome :) The first thing would be the seals and gaskets. I found from Louis (the German wonderland for Motorcycle owner) this set: GASKET SET SAITO XL 100...
