Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

Good weather today, started the beast again. What bothers me, is that the exhaust from the front-cylinder smokes somewhat at the header at startup. Always. Gets less when it warms. Dissapears all together when truely warm. It's not a lot, just those whifs of white-ish smoke. But that exhaust (front ...

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

After a few weeks of holiday / vacation, today was the day I started it back up... And it ruuuuunnnnssss !!!! :D :D :D Had it idle for about 2 minutes, then did some revs. Did all that about 3 times, and will do it a few more times today probably  . I do hear some light ticking in the front, bu...

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

yeah, reground and seated well (gasoline would not penetrate).
I'll order some exact shims from the stealer tomorrow. Hopefully that will increase the psi a fair bit already.

Fingers crossed!

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

Pulled the camcover off and found that 1 intake valve clearance is 0.09mm off (0.16 is prescribed and it's 0.07mm). That's a lot, but can that be a 28psi difference?!

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

I'm quite sure about valve seating and gasket fitting... I'm wondering if I didn't put too thick shims on... that might cause the valves not closing properly. Would / could this cause a 28psi difference?! I know; look and you shall see... but asking here is just a bit quicker and easier before takin...

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

Did compression test on both cylinders. - no plugs - ice cold engine - using starter motor for about 7 seconds - throttle fully opened - choke out Rear cylinder gives 148psi, but the front only 120 :(. Is there something that needs to 'settle' first?! Because it's kind of a dissapointment to be 28ps...

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

OK, so my 'mysterious split tube' is ' A ' in the picture posted by MacV2. This one goes down through the bike (righthand side) then splits into 2 of which 1 goes (in front of the front cilinder) to the 'down-pointing-tube-collection' on the left side of the bike (next to the alternator cover). The ...

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

Neh, you probably mean a tube which has been split for carb synching. That's not it. My rear cylinder has a singular tube going to the tap. Since 1 end goes down the lefst side of the engine, and those tubes should be: FUEL TANK BREATHER TUBE FUEL TANK DRAIN TUBE RADIATOR RESERVE TANK OVERFLOW TUBE ...

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

'tap' as in fuel tap? Because that's 1 of the 2 I had figured out I think  .

Isn't it supposed to go on the carb somewhere?!

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

OK, so... I promised myself this wouldn't happen to me. Made pictures before and during... And still, for the life of me... Where does the '3rd end' of the 3 way vacuum (or overflow) tube go? 1 end goes to the fuel tank / petcock, 1 end just points down on the left hand side of the engine, BUT THE 3...

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

I have rectified this mixup  ! I have now also done the shims. They're not exactly (to the hundreds) exact since that's difficult. My feelergauges have only '.05' milimeter variances so the shims are now at least 0.05 milimeter within spec :D . Had to change out only 2 out of 8, switched 2 ...

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

@gabi81 and Pete.l and Chris you hero's you! Simply pulling the top end of the chain did the trick. I did have to rotate the crank clockwise for a bit, but I'm just hoping it won't pose too much of a problem. I then refitted cams, chains, cam-clamps... whats the name and of course the MCCT's. Tighte...

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

Well, it went like this: - Front head was off, valves replaced. Of course all cams off, chain off, CCT out. Rear was untouched and in order! - Refitted front head, tried to turn engine over... didn't work... sooo... well... rear cylinder chain looks quite tense... Let's see if I can turn over engine...

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

@gabi81, you think? Will they magically refit well around the crank cog / sprocket ;)? I do hope so, so I'll at least give that at try.

Lesson learned anyway; don't turn engine while chain has too much slack...

Re: Timing- / cam-alignment, new CCT's, valves...

I'm thinking this too... I just had the front head off to fit new intake valves. I now wanted to place all cams at their correct timing (starting with rear) and so turned the engine, alle chains loose, all CCT's out, just wanted the correct 'RT_' mark on the flywheel to come by :). Since there can't...
