Re: what have you done to your "bike" today

Fitted up the CBR954 callipers and master cylinder today. I bought these off EvilBay from a seller in the eastern USA, they were said to be in good order bar a seized lever. The lever assembly came off nicely but the piston was jammed. A few light hammer taps got it moving inward and I was able to t...

Re: what have you done to your "bike" today

I have also received today a set of CBR954 callipers and m/cylinder, and I'll be fitting these up after an overhaul. I think the fault with the standard brakes is probably the m/cylinder size, it's quite small so you get a lot of lever travel, not much initial bite and then the brakes have a kind o...

Re: what have you done to your "bike" today

Took my first decent open road ride from Howick to Raglan return yesterday, about 360km all up, all of it twisty and pretty empty. I thought I was riding like a god, passed a bloke on an ST1300 and then the sod decided to speed up and keep pace with me. Definitely an ego-crusher to have someone ridi...

Re: what have you done to your "bike" today

Mac your bike looks fantastic. All I did today was fit a CBR1000 side stand (to cope with my shimmed shock) and I also cut the end off the foot brake pushrod so I could lower the pedal. I've been given a morning pass by SWMBO so I'm off for a Sunday ride tomorrow! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: Shim replacement - trying to keep it simple

I understand what I did was time consuming but I'm on my own without adult supervision and don't want to stuff up. This way, I can't get it wrong. With your method what happens if the chain drops off the crank sprocket and you don't pull it back to the same location? Then the cam timing will be off ...

Re: Shim replacement - trying to keep it simple

Just in case anyone is interested in my simple method for swapping shims out to avoid loss of timing between the cams and crank: I do one cam at a time. Rotate the crank to line up the timing marks on the cam sprocket; you'll notice one sprocket nut is up and accessible, the other is rotated down in...

Re: Fork compression damping question

Hi Ian Never heard of Byron Wallis, but a quick Google suggests there may be someone with that name in/near Waimate in the South Island. Listed as Wallis FB in the White Pages. For the filter I bought a tool that looks like a giant socket that fits over the flats on the outside of the filter and can...

Re: Fork compression damping question

Hey Ian, how's the suspension tweaking going? My advice is to carry a screwdriver with you so you can have a play with the rebound damping adjusters when you are out riding. Find a nice bumpy bendy section that you can go back and forth over, and experiment. The other setting to adjust is the sag, i...

Re: I Bought It With a Knock

I've really enjoyed your posts Jim.

Did you consider replacing the anti-rattle springs? They look to be a cheap part.

Re: Mccts

I did my MCCTs a week ago and it was no drama. Carl's guide is very reliable and easy to follow. I varied by not fully removing the carbs (left the coolant pipes attached and just rotated them out of the way). The only bit that had me scratching my head was that the cam sprocket marks did not exactl...

what have you done to your "bike" today

I'd have to say the TPS reset has been really great, the idle speed rose by 200rpm and the pickup off a closed throttle seems to be much keener. I'm also pretty happy with the front suspension changes, the bike is much steadier over bumps and seems to be soaking them up better. This was my first VTR...

HISS problem

My only experience here is a chip key on a Mini. There's a small transponder somewhere in/around the key lock that is broadcasting and waiting for a response from an embedded RFID chip in the key. If your keys are original I'd be checking for wiring damage around the lock area or corrosion at a conn...

Re: what have you done to your "bike" today

I did my thermostat test last night on the old one I pulled out. The darned thing looks like it works fine, so I'm mystified why the bike wasn't heating up as it should. I'll have to see how the new one performs. Here's a picture of my test rig (don't tell the missus!): http://i629.photobucket.com/a...
