Dodgy '99 Storm spitting from front carb and running on 1 cylinder

Hello guys! I really hope you'll can help me, I'm kinda losing my temper LOL. I have a '98 red Storm, just fitted MCCTs by myself, changed oil and filter... it's ok. Got it for cheap. Found a '99 and did almost 500km to get it. While I thought it was simply sitting there for maybe a year... the batt...

Re: Starter motor problems.

Yeah, when I told him that the problem was one of the small gears he removed them and we found they were already modified with the "pin mod". For years and years, I think. I owned the bike for 1 year and half, the previous owner only replaced oil and filter so the mod must have been perfor...

Re: Starter motor problems.

Yeah but it's been like this for years and years now... and all the gears and the starter clutch are still in great conditions. Well, fingers crossed!

Re: Starter motor problems.

Wanna laugh? It was the damn gear, yeah. But it already had the "pin mod" done before! :eek2 Looks like the old pin got worn and couldn't lock the gear in place... my mechanic replaced it, changed the oil and now the bike is back. :biggrin Of course I still have to deal with the ebay selle...

Re: Starter motor problems.

LOL even if I wanted to sell it for that amount, remember that I'm in Italy! :whatever He's a friend. Usually works on cars but he's the only honest mechanic 'round here. Bike mechanics here are a bad breed, trust me. Only had bad experiences. If this guy makes a mistake it's not 'cause he wants to ...

Re: Starter motor problems.

Yeah, I'm now sure Tony's right and my mechanic's wrong... the funny (but not funny) part is that I already ordered the starter clutch for £50  'cause the mechanic was pretty sure of his diagnosis... :Ball Kick: I can't contact Tony due to being a newbie on the forum. Tomorrow I'll check with m...

Re: Starter motor problems.

I'm absolutely NOT arguing here, just wanted to be sure of what I need to check. I accept your diagnosis, tomorrow will go to the mechanic's workshop to tell him he's wrong and to check the gears you pointed as the problem. And just to confirm everything, the clutch rollers looked absolutely normal....

Re: Starter motor problems.

Nope, the woodruff is fine. I'm sorry if I can't really explain the problem but I'm italian and my English isn't good enough for technical stuff, I'm afraid. http://www.bike-parts-honda.it/pieces-honda-detail-4943-13MBBV41-VTR1000FV-1997-E__0800-VTR+1000+FIRE+STORM.html These are all the parts invol...

Re: Starter motor problems.

We checked and all the gears rotate... even the big one on the flywheel. But the flywheel will only move a little once on maybe 3-4 attempts. So it must be the starter clutch... what else? If they all rotate but can't transfer the motion to the flywheel, I guess the starter clutch is the only part t...

Re: Starter motor problems.

The "carter" is the engine base. Yeah, with my mechanic I removed the flywheel to check what was going on. All the gears are fine, everything turns but I guess the starter clutch is gone as the flywheel doesn't move. I found a new one (original Honda) for €70 or the whole big gear+stater c...

Re: Starter motor problems.

The problem is, I need to open the carter to find out the worn gear and replace it. They're a few, as you know. It will take time. :sad2

Video of the problem. The bike was connected to my car (with the engine on) so it's not a battery problem and you can hear the starter motor "slipping".

Re: Starter motor problems.

Hello! Sorry to resurrect an old thread but... I'm having troubles with the starter clutch/sprag. The starter motor is fine, turns but some gear slips and the bike won't start. The teeth of the next wear (where the motor engages) look fine too... so which part could be worn? My mechanic still has to...
