Re: Hopefully soon to be a VTR owner in Holland

I haven't seen a headstock stand before - does it somehow clamp to the headstock area of the frame? I was thinking about putting nylon strops around the headstock & yokes, lifting these with my Chinese engine crane. First clamp a beam across the rear swinging arm and support the ends in axle sta...

Re: Hopefully soon to be a VTR owner in Holland

Well, I bought it, off to pay & bring it home. The bike looks close to perfect - 20,000Km, 1999, doesn't look like it's ever been dropped or had the pegs down. Original Honda exhausts, just had a new battery & regulator fitted. The bars feel a bit low, so I'll be looking for a way to move th...

Re: Hopefully soon to be a VTR owner in Holland

That is one of the benefits of living in Holland. The cloggie plod don't take your license for speeding (unless you are exceptionally naughty), they just send you a bill. Taking your license would be killing the goose that lays golden eggs. This accounts for the speed traps hidden behind trees on de...

Re: Hopefully soon to be a VTR owner in Holland

Hi Alan,
Good to hear I'm not the only older one! I'm 7 years behind you. I can also see me taking regular breaks for an ibuprofen sandwich, so in reality, it probably won't be an issue.

Did you do anything to the handlebars to take weight off your wrists?

Re: battery

What I did read was that the more expensive lithium's have a charging protection circuit board built in, which controls voltage being supplied to the battery. It will protect from overvoltage, but won't make up for undervoltage. Cheaper ones don't have the protection circuit, and may fail sooner. Li...

Re: Hopefully soon to be a VTR owner in Holland

Thanks for the answers, it makes things really clear. I had visions of the 'choke' operating a butterfly valve like a small frisbee - the enrichment circuit makes a lot more sense. That also makes sense on the petcock. So now we rely on a float switch and a warning light, either of which can have a ...

Re: Hopefully soon to be a VTR owner in Holland

Just a couple of quick questions: The bike shop I visited had 2 Firestorms in stock. I'd seen someone saying that they could only pull the choke knob out about 1/4". I tried both bikes, the knobs felt sort of mushy (I'd expected a nice click), travel was maybe 10mm. Is this normal? Or is it a s...

Re: battery

I'm also expecting to be buying a new battery, for the bike that I haven't bought yet. How about going lithium? Here's one (there are many): https://fulbat.com/product/fltx12/ I checked specifically with the Dutch importer if the battery would be ok with the Firestorm's 20th century rectifier & ...

Re: Hopefully soon to be a VTR owner in Holland

Well, I went out and bought a nice helmet today, so it'd be silly not to get a bike to go with it. Now looking for 2 piece leathers that'll hopefully disguise my coronakilos 😳. I hope the weather plays ball on Monday, looking forward to the test ride. I'm expecting the bike to be stock, so jobs like...

Re: Hopefully soon to be a VTR owner in Holland

Thanks Chris, I did check the front (and rear) exhaust flange nuts - they both seemed ok. I generally looked around where the front wheel spatter zone was - the terminal on the starter motor was pretty well rotted, rust flaked off it so I guess it would have been a starter motor rebuild (the bolts w...

Re: Hopefully soon to be a VTR owner in Holland

Well - I went to see it. They were vague about how it was that the obvious date of manufacture was nowhere near the "age"of the bike. I noted the VIN: JH2SC36D3VV000238. The V in the 10th position would indicate that it's a 1997 bike, 7 years adrift from what they claim (and what the Dutch...

Re: Hopefully soon to be a VTR owner in Holland

Thanks all, It kinda confirms my suspicions, I'll check the VIN on the chassis. If it does turn out to be late 90's, I at least have a good justification to haggle the price down! I believe the post 2001 model had 10bhp more - is it noticeable, and would it be a big/expensive job to get those horsie...

Hopefully soon to be a VTR owner in Holland

Hi all, I'm returning to biking after a long time away. I had a couple of 500/4's when they were still new technology, a hideous first generation Z1000, various other bikes too. Hobbies include machining (I am lucky enough to have a reasonably well equipped workshop) and driving my excavator. I live...

Re: New owner questions - 1999 VTR1000F

If the scratches on the tank bother you (they would me but I'm just like that), you can get touch-up kits: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233896939102?epid=7044257685&hash=item3675580e5e:g:cjAAAOSwNHJgXyVs The colour is called Pearl Shining Yellow, code Y-124P. Lots more kits & vendors, easy to ...
