Re: Starter motor problems.
So we had this issue with the transfer gears on our storm. The slipping of the 2 gears got really bad and the bike would not start at all. We welded the gears in our case and now the bike starts first round. We made a video guide when we fixed it. Had to break the video in to 2 parts as it took some...

Re: Firestorm struggling to start
Yes. There are two gears, one is pressed onto a shaft fixed to the other. They should stay fixed together but one can rotate instead of staying fixed together under a high torque load. You won't be able to replicate it happening outside the engine. Simply remove and replace the pair of gears. We go...

Re: Firestorm struggling to start
Starter motor transfer gears. Could it be though as it is able to turn the engine when the plugs are removed? Yes. One gear turns against the other under a torque load. Without plugs there's no compression, so there's a considerably lower torque load. Hi, so today after running around for finding t...

Firestorm struggling to start
I have a '99 Honda VTR Firestorm (SuperHawk996) which has been suffering from starting issues for the past month. Sometimes it would start without any issue over and over. Sometimes it would start once but if we turn it off and try again, the issue would come back even if we let the engine warm up b...

Re: How tight should the timing chain of a Firestorm/Superhawk be?
RIght. I will be changing them. Any idea how tight the chain should? Is it not supposed to even have a bit of slack where you can raise it with a finger?

How tight should the timing chain of a Firestorm/Superhawk be?
Hi, I own a '99 Honda VTR Firestorm (SuperHawk 996) and I would like to know how tight a timing chain should be. At the moment my bike has the automatic chain tensioner. We removed the head cover and had a poke at the timing chain with a finger and it felt super tight and had no slack at all. We rec...

Re: 1999 Honda VTR Firestorm struggling to start
I put a "how to" in the Workshop Knowledgebase as to how to get the part out without too much work. If I recall correctly there were some posts on there detailing welding options. I put a "how to" in the Workshop Knowledgebase as to how to get the part out without too much work....

Re: 1999 Honda VTR Firestorm struggling to start
Yes, the screeching is caused by the two pressed-together gears on a shaft fixed to one of them slipping when they should stay locked together. If the plugs are out there is much less effort needed to turn the engine over, and therefore less torque going through the transfer gears. The only other p...

Re: 1999 Honda VTR Firestorm struggling to start
Could be the starter cable is the issue. When you took the starter off what was the condition of the bolt holding the starter cable. Was it badly coroded ? If that or the cable itself is coroded it will cause issues, loss of power getting to the started. Are there any noises from the left hand side...

1999 Honda VTR Firestorm struggling to start
Hi, we have been having starting issues in our Firestorm for quite some time now and in the past 2 days it has gotten worse. Getting the bike started has become very challenging. When we hold the push start button, the instrument cluster would dim and the starter motor makes a ‘wrring’ noise like it...

Is 20W-40 oil ok to use in the firestorm?
Hi, my 1998 firestorm is nearing its oil change and from my research online, I see people recommend 10W-40 motorcycle oil. The issue I have is where I live this type of oil is super costly. So I was wondering if it could cause any harm if I put 20W-40 motorcycle oil (CASTROL ACTIV engine oil 20W-40 ...
