I think you're asking for trouble at that sort of size, they really don't seem to like plates that arn't the standard oblong proportions. I have a 7x5 on mine and I've not had any bother, it's small enough not to ruin the lines of the bike but big enough to seem to keep them happy :)

If ever you take a HD apart again salvage the magnets out of it, hours of endless fun, they will actually hold through your palm to the back of your hand! just don't get your fingers trapped in between them :o

As long as you can guarantee the top bit's not banging into the bottom bit :P but I'd want it right, the back ends were never very good out of the factory. Obviously check the other linkages on there as we've seen the pics of what happens when they're not greased.

Hmmm I guess in the past the bike could have been carrying round a twenty stone bloke plus a pillion and not been adjusted correctly knackering out the shock, or it could just be the bump stops perished and decided to disintegrate.
