My carbs are playing up at the moment (too much fuel getting into the front carb) and I can confirm that it sounds like a small explosion under the tank (well actually, a distinct popping noise). Mine is generally drowned out by the thermonuclear scale explosions coming out of the exhaust though!

Thanks LotusSevenMan. I figured as much but it is nice to have it confirmed that that is the only likely cause before I go in there again. I stripped the float bowls and cleaned the valves and seats in them so I could have caught something and the front one was pretty gunky maybe I didn't get everth...

bag of nails

Hello again everyone. And thanks to everyone who helped me out with the fuel tap question last week (anti clockwise is ON). I cleaned and stripped my carbs today and cleaned and stripped my fuel tap (it had actually gunked up and stuck the vaccum mechanism shut). Started the bike and it ran :D but r...

Thanks Everyone. Yeah the petrol will have to go and I will have to have a good clean around but it is the thought of putting it all back together and having this additional issue, of not quite knowing if the fuel is turned on, that worried me. Having one problem is bad enough, two problems at the s...

Stupid fuel tap

This is an embarrasing question but........how can I tell if the fuel tap on my bike is on or off? I've just got my firestorm back after a difficult divorce (Note: if you leave your wife / husband, leave WITH your bike!). Anyhow, it wont start and if I know my firestorm the carbs have bunged ...

I recently reset my valve clearances. The only specialist tool required is something to retract the camchain tensioners. If you have ever replaced your CCTs you will have the small key shaped tool required. Otherwise you could make one from some sheet steel (Haynes manual has instructions) or use a ...

It just shows you that you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet!! The 1999 swap-over date may only refer to the US (where the website author is based) but I wouldn't start dismantling your bike just to find out. Faults like this are infuriating. Strangely, I have an early fir...

I have seen two theories for this problem and two solutions. One is that the carburetor throats on early firestorms are really too large for the intake manifolds meaning that the air/fuel mixture can't get enough velocity to reliably get pulled into the cylinders, especially at lower revs. According...

Thanks everyone. It's nice to know that insurance companies won't just refuse to cover someone who declares the use of a race can. It is also good to know that Carole Nash are OK with this, as I have had insurance with them for years. When I am getting close to having the thing back together, I will...

Insurance and 'less than legal' cans

I purchased a rather neglected VTR a few weeks ago and have been restoring it eversince. Now that all of the new parts have arrived and bits have returned from the chrome plater's, I am finaly starting to reassemble the whole thing. Among the many boxes of disassembled parts now in my garage are a s...
