Refurbished Starter Motors.

My starter motor is looking a bit sorry for itself, the nut that holds the cable on has rusted into a round brown lump. So much so that a spanner or socket would not even engage! I have disconnected the cable with the use of a dremel, but I now need either a replacement part or a refurbished unit. I...

Re: Won't rev above 7k, carbs or coils?

Well, I think I need to re-evaluate the riding skills of my friends. I don't get much time in the garage, so it took a while, but upon checking the cam timing they were 180 deg out! Checking the paperwork, the only time engine work was done was after a camchain tensioner went back in 2007! So I took...

Re: Won't rev above 7k, carbs or coils?

While I'm thinking about this.... When all is right, the firing of the pistons in relation to the crank is:- Rear fires - 1 1/4 crank rotations - front files - 3/4 crank rotation - rear fires - 1 1/4 crank rotation..... So the airbox has at least 3/4 of a crank rotation to refill after the gobs of a...

Re: Won't rev above 7k, carbs or coils?

ziggy, with the 180deg error, the cams are correctly aligned to the piston stroke [if you look at each cylinder in isolation], but as there is 2 TDC's on a 4 stroke cycle, the problem is the relation ship between when the back cyl fires and when the front cyl fires [or sucks] 180 degrees of the cam...

Re: Won't rev above 7k, carbs or coils?

The camshafts are rotating at half the speed of the crankshaft, so 180 degrees of the cams is 360 degrees of the crank. I would assume that these bikes use a wasted spark ignition system, where the coils fire each time the piston is at about TDC. If the cam is 180 degrees out, the inlet would be ope...

Re: Won't rev above 7k, carbs or coils?

Ok, you have worn me down... I'll check the cam timing next. The main explanation that has been playing on my mind is that of the intake not coping with a 'big bang' engine. That is the first time I have read anything that tries to explain why the timing being 180 degrees out still allows the ...

AMCQ46 wrote:over oiled K&N could be a problem, but I would still check the Cam timing just to rule it out
If the filter is over oiled, how would I un-oil it? Using the K&N cleaning stuff?

Re: Won't rev above 7k, carbs or coils?

So as far as you know the problem was latent from the PO - Whatever you think of their spannery skills and due to fact that it has had CCT failure in the past which would be the most oppurtune time for the er.. timing to have been done wrong - it would be definitely worth your while (and it'll be f...

Re: Won't rev above 7k, carbs or coils?

So to summarise - the previous owner when he last rode it never had a problem @7K - You bought it and rode it a couple of times without a problem then suddenly out the blue it hit a brick wall. Almost. In my first couple of rides, I did not go above 7k as I had no faith in the old tyres and I was j...

Re: Won't rev above 7k, carbs or coils?

easy.......... your cam timing is out by 180degrees I knew that one was coming... I have every confidence in the previous owner and the maintenance carried out to this bike, that it is not the cam timing. I have know the previous owner for years and trust his riding abilities. If the cam timing was...

Won't rev above 7k, carbs or coils?

Bit of background info, I bought my Storm a few months ago with standard cans and 7 year old touring tyres. It also came with a pair of race cans and the appropriate jets. These jets had been removed when the standard cans had been put back on, to reduce the noise for neighbours and early starts. It...

Re: Carb Removal Help!

Carbs stripped, cleaned and put back on. Inserting into the rubbers was easier than I had feared, but then I did smear them with a thin film of red rubber grease before hand! Unfortunately it does not seem to have solved the issue, as even just reving up at a standstill, she does not like going nort...

Re: Carb Removal Help!

Well I had 20 mins available last night, a rare occurrence! So off to the garage. A quick jemmy with a knuckle bar and a couple of pieces of wood and off come the carbs. :D The Haynes book of lies says to use a pencil to help compress the spring into the carb top, then hold with your finger and put ...

Re: Carb Removal Help!

Vacuum line to the petcock. See the read me for new members below. The vacuum line at the tank is sound, I've not checked the other end. How much fuel can flow without the vacuum? Enough for up to 7k? and the jets to suit I cringe every time I hear this. As for the jets, the bike came with the cans...

Re: Carb Removal Help!

welcome along first. have you tried putting the standard jets back in and see if it goes back to revving out properly. if it does at least you will know its a jetting problem not a dirty carb problem. The standard jets would need the standard cans too, that was to be the next step after a carb clea...
