I ride to work regularly and wear a ex-police hi-viz I used to wear one and it makes a definite difference, especially if you have the Blue check's as well. Avon Storms. Used them (and their predecessors) for years. Dual compound, 7,500 can be had from a rear. Sheeeet! Now I am worried - I'm going to take a listen today and report back. I sometimes get a 'camchain slap noise' once in a while and it might be a bit tappetty-sounding but ticking? Was it engine speed, when I took off? idling? It must have been loud cos you weren't that close!
