Smartphones are actually set up to back up your personal data via a given email address.
Then when you swap phone or lose a phone, you just grab the new phone, enter your email and password and all your contacts, calendar and email sync across to the new phone

As for Photos, most people use a USB cable back them up to a PC, or you can use one of the many Cloud Services, like Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc

Alternatively, you could use a third party program to back up your phone to a PC.

For back ups the more ways the better: PC, pen drive, external hard drive, cloud, burn it on a DVD... don't rely on just one backup if the SHTF.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

With an OTG cable, you can actually back your phone up to a thumb drive, directly from your phone, no PC required.
(That is if its an Android phone)

If its an iPhone, well that have iTunes

If its a Windows or other, good luck ;)

As an aside. If you smash your screen onand Android device plug in a micro USB mouse and you get a pointer. Which means you can still use your phone.
