UNMARKED SILVER CAMERA VAN NORTH YORKSHIRE

Post by scrowe »

You guys have probably been allerted to this by now but its worth mentioning again.

The 'ol bill up here have got a silver unmarked ford transit camera van roaming around north yorkshire at the moment. It's got blacked out rear windows and even a retractable awning mounted on the side like a flippin' camper!

They hide in plain sight on the malton by pass and most roads around Squires Cafe amongst others.

The only indication you have is a small window open at the back and a 6X6 removable "camera" label that you can't read until you are 50 feet away by which time its far too late to do anything.

These coppers have already clocked up some high profile busts like the bloke on the Fireblade that was doing over 100 on its back wheel and a bloke doing 142mph on an Aprilia RSV4 and they are getting 3 more vans this year so watch out.

Notice this is under the Theory section. They should be visible, but what constitutes visible. A sign that you can only see from 50 feet away  It's a grey area, but I'm sure with a good brief it could get thrown out of court.

wombles, as soon as they put that uniform they should be considered as targets. :biggrin

interesting link.
and the vid - http://pepipoo.com/files/Morning_Dew.rm clearly shows the officer is hidden from view and is basically scanning every vehicle looking for one thats a bit over.

ive had the 'you sounded like you were speeding' line before.
since when do police officers have calibrated ears ffs. what a stupid comment, yet its used in court, like when i got my 14 day ban...

loads of times ive seen them step out from behind a sign or bush with a speedgun.... as it says in the guidelines, they must be clearly visible for the duration of the check.... well maybe they are, just not immediately before otherwise the driver / rider wouldve slowed down.

regarding the signage.... they can only camp out on roads where use of a 'safety camera' is justified, usually by fatalities or high crash counts on a particular stretch.
these sites will always have the little b/w camera sign.

there may or may not be a camera there, but if you see the sign, thats all they need to have on the road, not necessarily a bright yellow sign within 50m of the camera.

they could also use this to justify camping on a flyover / bridge / side road to monitor the signed road, even though the road they are actually parked on or operating from does not actually have camera signage.

interesting suggestion about stopping the officer to ask if they are aware they are breaching their own guidelines...... i'd imagine that would be immediately met with "Obstructing a Police Officer in the execution of their duty." which, referring to the guy last year who flashed his lights to warn others, is a 6 pointer, plus a fine. :Banned:

Regardless of what the fuzz say about " safety cameras" this is a total revenue generator! Nothing more!

Over the last few years i've clocked loads of unmarked police vehicles in north yorkshire,

Audi A4 eastates in silver
BMW 5 series in black
Volvo T5 estates in metalic red
Volkswagon Golf R32 in grey (complete with bean can exhaust and tinted rear windows)
Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusas in black
Honda VFR800 Vtec's is silver
Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade in black
BMW S1000RR in blue & white

all with HD cameras which can play back on the side of the road for your viewing pleasure while he writes out ya FPN!!

Bottom line is they have spent hundreds of thousands of £ on cars and bikes just to fleece the already over taxed motorist!!! But like the Murpheys, I'm not bitter!! :D

spose we just have to remember these are sneaky buggers trained by sneaky buggers to be sneaky buggers!!! :cool2

Totally agree, too right it bloody is. It's getting away from road safety issues these days and putting systems in place to catch one out. It's like when you have carriageways where the speed limit is dropping up and down from 10mph (50's to 40s etc) with cameras there to catch you out. Then have the cheek to call it emissions control zone

My dear ol' dad got busted 2 years ago on his Aprilia Tuono when the local council decided to to move a 30mph speed limit 1/4 of a mile further out of the village he lives in over night without putting up signs to tell motorists of the change aside from moving the 30mph sign. So the following day when the old fart bowled through the new 30mph at 60mph a camera van was waiting.

That van got 128 motorists (78 were residents of that very village) that day and my dad got 6 points and £300 fine! When he contested it in court the judge said he was lucky to not to have been charged with due care and the speed he was doing, not banned!!! :x

He's been riding that road for 50 years and lived there for 40 and ridden that exact road the day before!!! there were no signs put up prior to warn the residents of the change or even a leaflet dropped in his letter box! its disgusting!
