Lighten my VTR?

Post by NZSpokes »

So my next big project on my VTR is to lighten it. Now its not my main everyday bike and not my pillion bike I want it my performance based.

To start I will get rid of the LH pipe and can. Will get a custom link pipe made and go single. Will keep my Yoshi full length was it looks like we will have some more DB restrictions at some track days. Also the stock pillion hangers will go and a alloy plate will be used.

My hot grips will come off along with the Scott oiler and Ventura rack. Only a small thing but the front indicators will be swapped out for flush mount ones. That will save weight and make a small help in aerodynamics.

The bike will be kept road legal so needs to keep the road legal gear.

Any other big areas that it can lose weight cheaply? New wheels would be nice but way out of the budget. Need to get my flywheel done as well.

Front and rear sub frames replaced with Ali ones .
Wheels swap them out for carbons .
Then dig very deep and get the full mori carbon body kit and yetis carbon tank .
All that should save you upwards of 20kg

carbon wheels would be the biggest benefit to waight saving.handling and engine pickup would all be improved.

"The Carbon Express" must be one of the lightest bikes on here, owner mik_str. Here's a link to his bike:-

Some quick and easy places to lose weight:

Rider footpegs 0,5 lb (replace with lightweight billet)
Inner fairing panels 0,5 lb (remove)
PAIR system 1,0 lb (remove)
Plate bracket and light 0,5 lb (remove)
Sidestand switch 0,2 lb (remove)
Stick coils 0,8 lb (replace stock units)
Exhaust hangers 1.5 lb (replace with lightweight Al units)
Rad grills 0,3 lb (remove)
OEM lower fairing 0.7 lb (remove)

Gas cap @ 0.5 lb (replace with billet non-locking unit)
Exhaust cans @ 10 lbs
Lithium battery @ 6 lbs

Things get progressively more expensive after this....... You can replace all non-structural bolts with Al and others with Ti (Toronto Cycles is a cheap source for this)
