Beware - scammer!

Post by Pem Brooke »

I've got my Kawasaki for sale at the moment and had an ad on Gumtree. Got a call on my mobile today from a guy wanting to know why I had dropped the price by half...he was rightly suspicious! He had replied to an E mail address that had been posted AS AN IMAGE within my pictures...directing enquiries to that address. It was a pretty close e mail address to mine, and has been created to divert any enquiries. The guy who called me to report it kindly sent me the fake e mail, so I know he's not pulling my chain.
The 'seller' requested payment by PayPal or Ebay...clearly a scam.
Since that I've cancelled my Gumtree ad (and reported it to the Anti-Fraud unit of the Police), but wanted to let you know...keep an eye on your ads!!
Here's what they managed to put in my ad...how the heck did they get in to modify the pics?

Here's the scam e mail address...

Twist it 'til it breaks, then back off half a turn.... :eh:

Close call. One needs to be very cautious these days.
how the heck did they get in to modify the pics?
Either someone who works for Gumtree or your account was hacked and then the image swapped. Simple enough if one has access to an account.

Good to see you back Carl! Long time no see.

Pem: Change your gumtree password pronto to somthing secure, and contact gumtree. Also any email associated with gumtree change the login password to that, as a good chance at some stage you've been hacked.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
