Newbie hello - maybe my new (old) bike has been here before?

Post by Chippieminton »

Hello from Ayrshire in Scotland.

I take delivery this week of a Firestorm which was a complete impulse buy having read positive comments on here and good reviews elsewhere. So yeah, bought a W plate red one with 32k miles on it off eBay whilst sat in a meeting at work. It could be a complete dog and I'll find out later in the week. However, I got it pretty cheap so have a bit of wriggle room to fix what may need fixing unless it turns out to be a disaster.

I did wonder though if someone on here might have owned it before as the guy I've bought it off said the previous owner was really on top of it and had done various things to the bike including upgrading the suspension. So if anyone sold a W reg bike to a guy in North Devon in 2014 I'd love to hear from you to find out what things were done on the bike.

Won't be long before I start on the stupid questions I suppose, as I'm not the most mechanically minded and I don't have much space to work on the bike. I've been riding VFR1200s for the last five years so this will be a complete change for me.

It seems so, from what I'm reading.

It was a gap in my biking history, having had a single cylinder CCM, a Triumph triple, and the V4 Hondas.

Cheers Kev. It's been sat in a barn for a while so it looks a bit sadder than this now I think. I'll know more on Thursday when it gets up to Scotland.

It does apparently. Will that be a clue as to who had it before?

Nope but it saves you fifty quid or so finding one

Still as it's unknown provenance work through if CCTs, R/R, shock linkages and starter motor terminal have been upgraded / serviced / looked at.

Aye, working through that lot will be the initial job.

That's why I was hoping to find that someone on here had owned it as the CCT question could be answered quickly one way or t'other.

Manual and auto CCTs should be easy to ID by eye

Manuals generally should be a protruding and threaded with nut

OEM autos look like this - replace ASAP

Bazza's manual CCTs are converted autos and will be obvious by the additional threaded coach bolt.]
