Re: Brake Caliper Upgrade

Post by mike.kir »

Hi guys

Sorry for digging up this old thread. I have currently mounted stock callipers with radial MC from R1 '08. It has 16mm diameter. I don't really like how brakes works right now and I was thinking of switching to well known set of MC and callipers from f4i. Could you tell me which set will work better- R1 MC and f4i callipers or full f4i set?

Thanks for response :D

Prob be best with the full set Mik.

As the M/C ratio will be right for the callipers.

The F4i callipers will be better than std as they have bigger pistons but you need the correct M/C to push on them for best effect & feel.

The F4i callipers are the same as on SP1 & 929 Blade the M/C for them is 19mm.

If you can get or have the callipers try with the R1 M/C but 16mm seems a bit small...

Now the F4i set up uses the oblong type res pot*...The SP & 929 uses a round pot like the std Storm one.

The Black storm I bought recently the bloke said he couldnt get the brakes to bleed well so he put a 929 M/C on it to replace the std one...The brakes felt crap..relly wooden with no feel at the lever...They worked & stopped the bike OK but just felt wrong...I put a set of F4i callipers on & they are much better...

* well it's an oblong pot in the UK ...
Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...

iirc the sp's and blade calipers have slightly differing piston sizes to the f4i, although they look the same from the outside, and i know the sp1 is a 19mm master and the sp2 is a 18mm as it's better for feel. buy iirc stephan is correct the f4i is a 16mm master.
and the storm is a 14mm master
as i'm starting to get confused, i'm going back to bed....

Why do people go for the f4i setup with a ratio of 35 when the 600rr/954/rc51 ratio is so much better for feel at 25?

i used to have the sp2 setup, with hel lines and armstrong wavy discs, it was very good indeed......
the sp2 is the same as the 954, from what i understand, honda realised the brakes needed more feel, so the changed the sp1/929 from a 19mm master to 17mm master on the sp2/954

I got pair of 929 blade calipers and m/c with new pads off the bay of e, £180. Don't know if that is cheap or not, but sooooo much better :) :)

By luck (i.e without a lot of research) I bought a 954 brake set for my VTR. When I de-linked my VFR800, I bought 600F4i parts. I much prefer the 954 set-up for feel and power. I put a 17.46mm CBR600RR master on my VFR and that is better with the 600F4i calipers (more feel, less grab) but still not quite at 954 levels.

Thanks for all the responses :) you've convinced me to go with 945 full set. Fortunately the price I might get for R1 radial MC equals the price of 945 set so it will be nearly free upgrade

In here (Poland) I have this set with used pads for £90.

i bought my sp2 calipers from the usa, much cheaper there, just buy fro a dry weather state, florida/texas and so on, iirc my calipers cost me £40, luckily i had my forum drugs mule(Al) bring them back from the usa for me, so i only had uk postage to pay. but even with shipping and customs, it's still cheaper to get them from the usa.....

under £100, just be aware of customs charges

these are blade calipers, not sure what year they did a black calipers tho, decent upgrade, they need some tlc, but they're very cheap, anyone putting 98 onwards blade or cbr f4i calipers on standard forks, must remember you'll need to trim either the caliper or fork mounting points to make them fit, very easy to do.

Finally after some negotiations I've bought 954 MC and calipers in good shape for 72£ including shipping. Thick pads that will last some time are a bonus.

I've put F4i calipers on and have a 5/8th master cylinder (standard VFRR750) I've not ridden the bike yet but the lever feels spongy, anyone else got the same spec set up ? 5/8th master cylinder not necessarily from a VFR.. I think a 19mm one will give firmer leaver ??
