speedo face removal & replace

Post by lloydie »

As i wanted a white speedo face to match the other to faces i looked into getting one made ,
i was lucky to find a chap (wicky) who took on the challenge of producing one for me and as so i had very little input in its making and i think wicky did a great job  .

right the clocks this is as you know the cluster

not very nice i know and this is why i wanted matching dials (all white).

to start with you need to remove the 3 bolts holding the cluster on , one left side and one at the bottom and the last one on the right ,
Image.
now you will need to undo the two black connector plugs on the back and the cluster can be removed from the bike .
now to remove the cluster face turn it over and remove these 5 screws
Image .
now lift the front off the backing
Image.
now to find the natural resting position of the needle to do this carefully lift the needle over the stop and mark the face on the side so you can transfer the mark to the new face .
Image
take a picture of where it lays as when you refit the needle you want to get it back in the same place .
now the fiddly bit  needle removal .
to remove the needle i found it easiest to use a fork yep out the knife and fork draw .
slide the fork under the needle and with a little tug it pops right off
Image
put it somewhere safe or paint it to match the others its up to you .
now you need to remove the two Phillips screws either side of the needle , now the face will come off.
Image.
now the fiddly bit number two :( pin removal .
this is a pain in the ass if you loose it  now the best way i found to do this is using a white carrier bag without holes in the bottom , turn the face upside down and while holding it inside the bag use the flat side of a dinner knife press against the back of the pin and it will pop off flying into the bag

woohoo half way there

now you need to transfer the marks from one face to the other ,i put one on top of the other and copied the mark .
now to replace the pin
Image
replace the face on the cluster
Image
replace the needle to where you marked the face earlier .but dont push it on all the way as you may need to check its resting position by moving it up to the stop and letting it rest back repeat till you get it right . when its back in the correct place push it down till the needle is half way down the pin .
Image

refit the front cover then refit the cluster back to the bike job done ,
worth while just to double check the needle is in the correct place by checking the speedo next to a gps just to make sure .

Better than gaffer tape and blue tack  .
It's always better to use tools that are readily available that everyone has than going out and buying special tools that you'll only use once :-) and thank you for the review

You could adjust it slightly to allow for different gearing, if you was cunning that way, and save on the cost of a speedo healer.

It could be very easy except the odometer will still read high !
