Cheers Carl. It's not too bad but I might give it a bit of a tickle - good to know that I won't need rubber gloves and breathing apparatus :D

A brass wire wheel in a drill makes the job an easy one. Do it with the valves dropped in to avoid damaging the seats.
That's for the heads, the pistons can be scraped and wire brushed with the rotary brush as well, it sort of polishes the surface, less stuff can stick thereafter.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Well, here she is (if the photo's loaded ok) - stripped down and cleaned up, waiting on new exhaust valves. Fingers crossed, this is as bad as it gets

Half a camshaft-holder bolt, no prizes for guessing where the other half ended up! Managed to extract the bolt and now waiting on a replacement, but well worth the wait

Replace bolt finally arrived. Bolt in, valve cover on. Oil-cooler fastened, radiator on and coolant filled.
Then, holding my breath, I fired her up. Brilliant, no death-rattles, just a beautiful v-twin thump.
A huge thanks to everyone who helped keep me sane and the guidance that kept the confusion at bay - Carl, you played a blinder
For someone who had only ever changed the oil it's been emotional - fingers crossed the weather will hold.
The smile has returned. :D

Brian I've just changed your email address and put "at" instead of "@" for your security. Anybody wanting to send an email to you should realise they need to put the correct "@" in themselves without any spaces in between,

Chris.
