I have not had no luck gaining access from the front. The crossbar on the frame seems to get in the way. From the side is a possibility but I see that as being fiddly and more time consuming than removing the carbs. Maybe I don't have the right tool for the job and also working out on the deck (Abba Stand) in the elements doesn't help.
Back to the OP
There is a bit more noise than before, seems more clattery, but that could be in my head as I'm actually listening for noises now!
It would help to know if it was this bad before any work was started but running with MCCT's does change the sound characteristics especially when the engine is cold but not like that. From listening to the first Vid there is definitely more tapping than normal. The second vid it can't be heard so well.
It reminds me of when I first got my Storm and done mine. I made a boo boo

with the timing. Basically when going from the rear cylinder on the compression stroke (RT) I did not turn the crank a full 1.25 turns anticlockwise and stop on the front compression stroke (FT). Going from the rear (RT) to the front (FT) the FT mark should pass the inspection window once and then stop the second time it comes around. This is 1.25 turns!!! I stopped at the first time it appeared in the inspection window thinking it was right. I did not check the position of the front cam lobes or stick a finger in the plug hole to verify it was on the compression stroke.

I started the bike like this and there was a loud tapping noise similar to yours. The bike rode, but I only went a small distance before realising that this was not right as it was noisy, so stripped everything down and started again from the beginning. This time removing both cam covers. I was lucky not to cause any damage.
I'm not saying this is where your problem is but it's something to be aware of. If your sure the sound is coming from the head area of the bike and not from somewhere else. I would be Stripping things down and double checking everything. Follow the MCCT thread in my signature, remove both cam covers, check position of cam lobes and their alignment, adjust as necessary and while your in there it's worth checking the valve clearances.
But hold on...before you do that as it's a fair bit of work , there is another possibility here. Carb slide bouncing around. Have a read through the following thread including copying and pasting the youtube link to make a noise comparison.
weird noise!!!
