Vik's VTR from dull blue to stunning VW silver

Post by Wicky »

Image

This is how it was when we picked it from Lincs in March

Image

With Krieger CCts and upgraded R?R installed and bodywork awaiting paint

Image

All back together and just needing fuel - Vik running to the petrol station

Image

Hard to believe it's Oct and in the 80s!

Image

Graphics are minimalist as the vinyl tail logo went on fine but the remaining chrome decals wouldn't stick on the fresh paint which scuppered that plan.

Apart from that all went well on reassembly, I installed inline fuel filters just in case but after warming it up and just as we were heading out for a well deserved and much needed pint. the bike began cutting out and was just running on one cylinder. A quick shufty under the tank showed fuel only running to one filter ?? Took the blocked one off and blew it through, which seemed to get it runnning, then it cut out again. Wiggle the fuel pipe seem to unkink it - tog up gain with sunset approching and thirst getting critical it cuts out again. I suspect either pipe kinkage or paint from the resprayed tank is causing the problem as near the filler is bubbling as if the fuel is acting like paint stripper (not sure if the lacquer is petrol resistant , and despite the appearance the tank was well masked up any paint dust in the tank would be curdling into sludge eeek!

edit - Could be a kinky pipe causing the problem... http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 15&start=0

Has anyone had any problems with Fuel filters fitted - do they allow enough flow as some types seem designed for pressurised sytems with fuel pumps.

The bike looks really good mate, I really like the decals. They stand out well with that colour.
Don't you just hate it when you think it's all finished and the b**tard bites you in the ass.
By the way is it wrong I am strangely aroused by that outfit. I think it's the petrol can, it hints at a certain wealth.

I like them in silver!! Nice work.

Don't forget to let DVLA know of the colour change. U might get stopped for suspicion of cloning a motorcycle!!

you & the mrs been travelling time again? tut.

re the running on one... i had the same problem and it was the main pipe from the tap was twisted.
looks like what id done is put the tank on the seat then instead of turning it back the same way i'd gone all the way round & put a twist in the pipe.

also check the routing of the pipes so you dont have any airlocks, assuming the filters are on their sides??? the storms carbs are gravity fed, unless you've fitted a fuel pump... if theres any high points in the fuel line it will airlock & fuel will just go down the other pipe
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Thanks Benny

Looked at it again early this mornin' and it just needed a subtle readjustment of the routing of a fuel hose and blowing through a filter as that was causing an airlock like a saturated face flannel at Guantanamo Bay... Once the hose and filter were reconnected & 'primed' it flows like a good un. Job done. Just to watch out for it repeating if it ever runs out of gas,

Very nice indeed… I used to have a Bora that colour.

But I feel that I must take issue with your phrase ‘dull blue’, 8O although I tend to agree but… you see, the problem I have is that my storm is blue. :problem:

However, It would be orange any day for me… if I was to choose.

How did you do it by the way? Did you have it done by a 'professional' or did you tackle it yourself?

Cheers Opel - Nah she wouldn't let me as I would have sprayed it red! or if blue, Candy Tahitian blue! Done professionally and they've done a good job from prep to finish. There was damage to the plastics on the r/h side bodged and hastily resprayed but it was relatively low milage - so this make over should help it last for another decade or four.

Just looking at your names I think you should have a "Wicky & Vicky" sun strip made up and put across the top of your screen, just like they used to do in the 80's in them old Fiesta XR2's.
