Starting a engine after a lay up
Now I'm nearing the day (tomorrow ) when I can try to get me new engine (macs old one) started.
I am little unsure it will start as it's been left dry for many months with no oil in it .
So is there anything other to do in preparation before I press the starter ?

Re: Starting a engine after a lay up
Put a bit of oil in the heads and let it work its way down, turn it a few times by hand and all should be good

Re: Starting a engine after a lay up
+1 and maybe pull the plugs and give each cylinder a shot of WD-40. Though she will smoke a bit after start up if you do this.Ckennedy wrote:Put a bit of oil in the heads and let it work its way down, turn it a few times by hand and all should be good

Definitely needs to be turned a few times slowly as has been said. did it have no oil in at all?

Yeah & what about the engine ???lloydie wrote:Dry as a nuns ........ .mattycoops43 wrote:Definitely needs to be turned a few times slowly as has been said. did it have no oil in at all?

It last run at about 16.30 on the 28/4/2013...into the back of a Galaxy...then lay on it's side for about 10 to 20 mins poss longer BUT NOT RUNNING !
I assume that it cut out on impact as the ignition was smashed amongst other things...

I don't remember much as I was out of it having head-butted said Galaxy, do remember those around me panicking as they thought fuel was leaking out & some helpful bystander was standing there having a fag...

Once I got it back from Tony sometime in May IIRC over the next month or so it was stripped down & at some stage all fluids were drained out. In hindsight may be I shouldn't have drained the oil but at the time I was more concerned about not having a pool of oil on the floor.
Anyway if you had pulled your finger out & paid for it quicker it wouldn't have been sitting for so long...

Re the restart...wasn't there some advice posted recently about this along the lines of...Oil down the bores, turn over by hand slowly then turn over on the starter but with plugs not in & fuel off....
OH & Lloydie what's happening about the set of crankcase covers that I was supposed to be getting back ?
Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...

Re: Starting a engine after a lay up
Lloydie, My routine would be, new oil and filter, plugs out and a drop of oil squired into each cylinder (as already said). Then with a good battery (or jump leads from a big one) give the engine a good few spins over on the starter, so that the oil gets pumped around the system. If the oil light goers out when doing that even better. Refit spark plugs and fire her up,
Chris.

Just pick up an oil filter from halfords

I had to go to 3 to find one .
Plugs are out and I gave a squart of wd then left it . When I get back I will fit the filter and oil and see what happens
