Time for coolant change..

Post by Saintsman27 »

Hi Guys... I have looked at the forum a few times but I cannot find the full procedures
involved for me to do an engine coolant change on my Firestorm .. 2001 F1... Could anybody point
me to the right thread if it exists ... or give advice here , what needs to be removed and what
must be done...any tips ? also types of coolant to use preferably a premix and availability... many thanks
to all ..

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

I recently did mine, I undid the lower pipe on the n/s rad, mainly because whilst the bike is on the side stand, that pipe looked like the lowest of them all, I drain the coolant out and then replaced it with the Halfords ready mixed pink coolant, I bought 5ltrs for just over £20, I used between 2.5 and 3ltrs iirc.
when I filled the system, I filled it thru the rad, not the expansion bottle (it means taking the front fairings off), I also kept the engine running and removed the top of the expansion bottle, I didn't want to get any air locks, once the coolant in the rad started to bubble and steam I shut the engine off and let it cool down, I then topped it up slightly if need, once again thru the rad. then I put the rad cap and expansion bottle cap back on, run it upto temp again, until the fan kicked in.
job done. I've been on a few rides since and all's well.....
there is every chance I've done something wrong tho, and i'm sure someone will be along to tell me so.....

Ahh. Now. If AP was a real spanner, would he be a cheap Rolson spanner, or a top quality Snap on one? :?:

Oh. And what's a "coolant change" when it's at home? You mean to tell me that my Storm has a bottle for wet liquidy stuff other than the petrol tank? :eh:

Next, you'll be telling me that the plastic bottle on the handlebar is meant to have liquid in it as well....
If it ain't broken...f*ck about with it until it is.

It may well do say that Jay but for Storms it's different according to the Haynes ity says ''drain the old then stick a hose pipe in the rad & flush through until it runs out clean...''

Strange that. Those are the SAME instructions as printed in the handbook for our local Colonic irrigation clinic....

Haynes manuals are notoriously crap and give you bad information, look it up in the factory manual.

It is kind of funny that the tell you to only use distilled water in the system to keep from getting scale and other nasty stuff in your cooling system.

Then they turn around and tell you to flush the system with the water they told you never to use in the filling instructions......like you are going to get it all out after flushing the system.....

That is why I change mine out every 2 years and only flush out with a little bit of distilled water and then just fill it back up

Here we are arguing about flushing, tap water, distilled water...whatever...

Lets just go back to Martys post & spot the errors in his way of doing it...

MacV2: are you a regular then?
...erm...the manual was just laying there at the same time I was....and well...um, it was more interesting than the usual collection of 20 year old "Peoples Friend" magazines that are there to help you pass the time.

Had to laugh at "are you a regular?". No Sir. And erm, don't you have to be "irregular" in order to attend such places?

But, nope. Never been to one. Honest Guv! I would be the type to save 30 quid and go do it meself by visiting the jet wash at the local garage late at night. :Show elbow: 200 psi and a hot wax to finish would certainly leave everything clean and shiny! Apart from the other internal organs, which would be all gritty and strewn over the forecourt after using said power washer.... 8O Hmmm. Maybe not.

Anyhoo. Moving swiftly on. *coughs
If it ain't broken...f*ck about with it until it is.
