possible bike change

Post by agentpineapple »

next year I might be in a position where the storm will be sold, as I could possibly need a bike that is more relaxed, with a greater fuel range.
what would you suggest.
i'd want more power, the handling to be as good if not better than a storm. more fuel efficient. more comfortable.
I might be riding as much as a thousand miles a week for at least 6 months of the year.
I don't care if it's not a twin. i'd deffo consider a triple. V4 or even an il4.

if your not looking to spend too much then a Gen1 Fazer thousand, 200 mile tank range, all day comfy seat, upright position. fit a race can and get the carbs Ivanised (there's a guy who lives in Spain does it and comes to the UK for fittings too), Nitron shock and some K tech fork springs. you'll have over 140hp at the wheel and surprisingly good handling.. A good Sub 20k mile bike approx. £2500-3000, mods approx £1k. Only down sides are Exup valve can stick, regular simple maintenance stop this (buy one with the valve working) Silver engine paint flakes on bikes ridden in the salt, other than that it all fits the bill..

If your spending more then here's a few options

Kwak ZZR1400 (must check valves at correct intervals they Will need doing and fiddly job)
Kwak Z1000SX
Triumph Tiger 1050
BMW R1200RS (the latest one)
Virt machine
Latest VFR800
Yam FZ1 Fazer (tank range not as good as early Fazer but handles and goes better out of the box)
BMW S1000XR

I when're from Storm to VFR 1200. Effortless 3:400 mile a day cruising. Secondhand prices under 5 k now.
Only wish I'd kept the Storm alongside.

You said handling as good or better than the storm, well the triumph you can discount, the blackbird in std form too, ZZR1400 ain't bad for a big bike but check maintenance record.. K Series BMW's ABS unit's pack up, cost a reasonably priced storm to repair, steer clear.
Out of that list the only one to go for that sort of fits your list is the VFR1200, Tank range only 130 ish miles though and rear shock adjuster will seize, they all do.

Go have a look at an older vfr800 pre-variable valve.
Engine is bullet proof, gear driven cams, tank range 200 up, 120 hp, handles a treat and comfy.
Bit heavy but solid and reliable, last forever.
You could buy one of them and keep the FS too.

I had a go on my mates k1300 it was a really nice bike, it looks big but once your on it feels quite small and handles good to, only downside is the price of spares and insurance

Problem in a situation like this is that if you were to buy a bike based on avoiding ones which are known to go wrong you'd probably never leave the house!

I bought a brand new vfr800 back in 1998, it was a nice bike, but it's less power than a vtr.
i'm thinking that a more modern bike will handle better and give a lot better fuel economy/range.

Personally i would go for a Blackbird. You would get all you're looking for in a bike, plus Honda reliabity.
SO WHEN DOES THIS OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER KICK IN
