Interseting trackday/tyre test

Post by popkat »

On 20th June I'm taking part in a tyre test/trackday at Brands Hatch. No cost to me (except getting there) lunch provided, sounds great doesn't it..

I'm a bit concerned though, the tyres are MITAS Sportforce 8O

I don't know anything about them, I've never sold any. I think they are Slovakian ?, will look them up before I go though..
They might be good, if they are I'll try and sell some as I think they are around £200 or slightly less fitted to a bike for a pair which makes them probably the cheapest out there.

The sizes they are providing are 120/70/17. 180/55/17 and 190/50/17, this means I can't take one of my older bikes so it's down to a choice of 2, I either take the Firestorm or I can borrow a mates CBR600RR track bike, don't know which one to take ?, I think if it's wet I won't take the Storm as in it's 16 year life I'm sure it's never seen rain and would be a shame to get it all dirty now, maybe I'm being silly there, dunno ?, The track bike has full supersport chassis, and a tuned engine, it looks like an ex race bike and is all painted up Pata Honda colours, I've never ridden it..

Will be nice to get back out on track, last time was October 2014

Thought I'd do a quick search as I haven't heard of them either.
Have a look http://www.mitas.co.uk/

How cheap are these tyres and should I be getting a five finger discount :shh:

:D :D

Mitas is Czech brand, used to be independent, now part of Trelleborg company. Their focus is on big tires on big machines, like agriculture. These Mitas are just better versions of Sava tires (Slovenian brand under Mitas). What I know their R&D is not the best one, my friend was working in company so I have a bit of inside info.

Personally, no reason for me to try them or swap for Metz M7. What I consider is to try new Bridge S21. But none of these cheap brands, even if it is czech one.

edit: I saw many of UK guys liking sport-touring tires on track, maybe you treat it differently ...

Hmmm, maybe a bit of a poisoned chalice.

Presume the CBR isn't insured. "You bend it you mend it"?

Presume the Storm is insured for the road and, heaven forbid, if you bin it you can always say it happened on the road. That's what I did the last time I was at Brands (on a road insured CBR600). Binned it at Paddock....

Is it the short or the long circuit?

They don't look they curl much, could mean lots of exit grip but less at full lean.

Short circuit I think.. If I bent either I'd mend myself, not worth putting a claim in.

Good point. It was a long time ago though.

Sometimes you can see random/shady folk cruising the paddock at track days on the Anglesey circuit. Taking particular attention with bikes with plated bikes on, or about to go on track.

Back in the day they used to take notes & I remember one guy being confronted about their actions. Its very easy now that everyone has a phone. You'd never spot them.

Only a fool would think insurance companies are not aware this caper goes on :shh: :silent:

Interesting Lloydie
are they only good for track or do you think there is some road mileage to be had out of them as well?

Great on dry/damp roads .
I've rode it hard for about 1k on the road so far and they are just starting to clean up from the track day .
They heat up very fast too .
I've pushed them hard from cold and they ain't gave me any slips yet .
I do like these tyres if I'm honest and will gladly fit them again .

Nice!
Between You and Malc I have a feeling there may be a new brand for recommendation in the Firestorm locker.
Let's see how they withstand Brands and our Tamed (semi) Motorcycle Champion
