97-01 Storms (and most Hondas of that period) were fitted with the auto self-destructing non-finned R/Rs - then from 01-onwards they learnt the error of their ways and fitted more reliable finned versions.

Better yet replace with a FH mosfet > http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... ty#p351482

The VTR is a very reliable bike with very few issues. The two biggest concerns if not already dealt with are the Cam Chain Tensioners (CCT's) and the Regulator Rectifier (R/R) which should take priority in maintenance/upgrades. > http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 45#p304638

The smell is sulphur from the battery, so you may already have damage there.
Check the overflow to make sure you don't have sulphuric acid drips.
And, if course, if there's any acid left in it...
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Yeah I would check that battery, sounds like the cells are cooking the acid, if you can smell it that aint good.

Each cell has vents built into the top! If it's cooking it that's where it will leak from!
