Bike isn't charging

Post by Fabiodriven »

I'm going to do some diagnosis on the bike soon, I haven't done much yet. It wouldn't start one day, so I jumped it and it started. When I removed the jump pack, the headlight dimmed and then I turned the turn signal on which caused the headlight to dim even more with the blinking of the turn signal. I'm going to get my meter on it and make sure it's not charging, then go from there. I'm assuming it's going to be the stator, but I'm curious if this bike has a replaceable charging coil or if it's known for any common issues where it stops charging suddenly. Thanks for reading!

The OEM or cheap aftermarket Regulator Rectifiers are know crap. Additionally the OEM wiring was marginal when new, worse as it aged.
The Best fix is a MOSFET Genuine Shindengen fh020aa RR and proper cabling

Image
Check the stator to wiring harness, RR to harness, and battery hook ups for loose, damaged connections
then

Get out your multi meter and test Battery voltage, key off and Key on.
Test charging voltage at idle and 3,000 RPM

Awesome, great post my friend. Thank you very much. I do know the battery terminals are not the issue but the rest I'll have to diagnose.

I have a question. So this looks like a universal kit? When you mention "proper cabling", do mean the correct connectors themselves, or is there more to it than that? The kit seems to fit a wide variety of uses. Does it come with instructions so I'm able to wire it correctly?

Good question.. Universal kit? You mean the one I pictured above? If so, no not at all, its specifically made for our VTR1000F. Plug and play cables, that bypass all the OEM wiring harness (a source of charging issues)

Proper cables, by proper I mean, yes the correct connectors, not just that they fit but of high quality materials so they done break after a season or 2.
The wire is quality 100% copper fine strand with an insulation type that will last in the heat, cold, oils and solvents, of the correct size to work with what we have for a charging system.

Terminal crimps that are done correctly, F crimp on the wire with a bell flare for less strain on the terminal / wire junction, an O crimp on the insulator. No bend in the terminal pin after crimping "Banana bend" Image
Correct amount of wire protruding through the crimp

Cables are the correct length so there is no excess to be bundled or too short and the routing path is less optimal.
And finally, the cables are made with a sheathing that protects the wires from chafing.

That is what makes a quality cable set that will last.

Some just want the bike to work today and dont care that it will fail again later, today is good enough.. thats not wrong but it sure is not how most want it done.

I had one of those f crimps on my bell flare once,
The memory of that day still makes me walk funny for half hour or so.
I've never spoken to her since.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

And just for you I edited the post to include "banana bend"
Do your best :D

Hahaha good stuff. So instead of a picture of the exact kit with the correct connectors, could you provide a link? My search turned up only universal kits which is why I was asking if there was a "correct" kit for the VTR1000.

Hey guys, merry Christmas! I was hoping someone could direct me to where I can get this upgraded voltage regulator correct for the Superhawk. My searches have only turned up results for a universal kit. Thanks!
