Chain and Sprockets for 1999 VTR

Post by RiderOfTheStorm »

Hi All.

I need a new drive chain and sprockets as I have just noticed the adjusters are at Full Adjustment  . Can anyone recommend any Chain/Sprocket sets that outperform/Stand out as being better than the rest?

Also the gear ratios to go for.

Nice day so just had a look ..Steve.

I recommend a heavy duty X-ring ring kit, along with a scottoiler...

i am in the market for new sprockets and a chain too, i thought about keeping 16 front but putting a 43 on the rear. im not too bothered about top end, but i hope it doesnt put the speedo out too much.. the only kits i found so far that i have seen that lets you choose your sprockets comes with a regina or ek chain.anyone any experience with theese? ive had regina and it was fine.

is there much difference between o ring chains and x ring?

Hi

Chain and sprockets sorted.

Thinking about the scottoiler.

Does it really make a difference on sealed chains Wicky?

Depends if you believe all the Sales Blurb James.

There's meant to be less power loss and "squishability" than "o" rings.

Has anyone noticed the difference?

Steve.

I went for X Ring chain and standard gearing.

Maybe next year but the aim is to get her on the road as soon as possible and with the MOT due I was not looking for complications.

This is only the first year of ownership and I thought I'd get to know her first.

yeah probably best, will keep your speedo right too.

aye and the fuel cost.although would it make alot of difference if your not riding too quick.my riding is mainly backroads, not alot of high speed stuff, thought it might make the bike a bit better for that sort of riding.

Scottoilers are good if you are into commuting or intending to do high mileage. They can be a pain to get adjusted just right either dumping too much oil not enough. I've had them on both my previous machines but much prefer the 30 mins it takes to clean degrease re-oil & wax the old fashioned way. It also has the benefit that you are able to closely inspect the whole of your running gear giving piece of mind for the next 500-600 miles.

i went with a did heavy duty gold chain, 15t front and 42t rear, that way you get even chain and sprocket wear, the bike much more lively, i didn't notice any difference in fuel costs, my speedo is out, when it reads 30 i'm only doing 23/34mph. the only downside i can see is when doing long motorway trips at high speed, in excess of 120mph, the bike feels like it could do with an extra gear, but as i use my bike for fun and i rarely go near a motorway, i don't care. you can always try some different sprockets and if you don't like them, sell them on and go back to standard...
