What size spark plug spanner?

Post by Tempest »

Easy question for a change :)

Just what size spark plug spanner (socket) do you need for the storm?

I was in Halfords today and saw a couple for sale. Normal size (car type) and a smaller one.

I bought the smaller one on the understanding I could bring it back if it's not right.

Well, unplugged the front plug cap (supprised at just how deep down the plugs are).

Popped the new socket down there (on an extension bar) and it just spins, so I guess even this smaller one is the wrong size.

As you know, it's all working blind, so I can't actually see the dam thing!

So, I'll be taking this back, and prob have to find the right size in another store.

So (as I said) what size socket do I need?

By the way, I have done a search on here, and found a few others having problems with reaching the plugs.

Any types I should look out for?

thanks.

Just found a topic (on here)

Seems it's a 12mm spark plug spanner.
But it's the same size as an 18mm socket.

Must admit, I'm a tad confused with that explanation!!!

Well done mate you've hit the nail on the head, I've tried to explain this before but it sounds confusing :!: Take a spare plug with you or a nut (of the same size as plug) just to make sure when you go back to Halfords :!:

Errr, but of course, I have the same problem as the person in the thread I found that info in.....

I can't see the plug (way too deep) to see the size, and I can't take it out as I don't have a spanner to remove it with :confused

All I want to know is this.....

What is the Across/Flats dimension of the hexagon on the spark plug.
I can work everything else out from that.

OK my fault I miss read your post

I've just been up to my workshop (got wet in the process :D ) and doubled checked the plug size, it's definitely an 18mm socket from my socket set that fits the spark plug :!:

Ok, so I shall see what (in reality) an 18mm "normal" socket is.
