Which Clutch?

Hi All,

I detected some clutch slip on my track bike at Brands, I was hoping it was an impressive looking wheel spin, but no....

Any of you guys replaced the clutch? If so any recommendations? I'm tempted just to put Honda replacement in, but if there are any recommendations I'd like to hear them.

Hard riders or track day riders who've experienced clutch slip have found fitting a slighter stronger set of springs help. See link below:-

i changed mine for a set of friction plates first of all from demon tweeks, and it slips when cold, fine when it warms up, i phoned them and they sugested i should have changed the full set with the metal plates to, so i did this with a sureflex set from them and EBC springs and its made no difference, still slips when cold, fine when warmed up again though.

Hi, Gilson.
I'd suggest checking that the clutch pushrod and lower piston are moving correctly, and for their full travel.
This might mean that the clutch isn't quite fully engaging, same as when you have the cable too tight on an cable one.

If you need to sort it I've got a spare (secondhand) clutch sitting in the garage. I'm near Brands if that helps.

Only trick is the clutch centre nut, which is usually bloody tight- and is staked onto the shaft.
You might want to have a spare one to hand- they're only a few pounds.
Although you can jam the primary gears to try to loosen it, unless you have an air socket I have found them difficult to shift without the special tool.

21st Moto in Swanley (cheers, guys :wink: ) will lend you the Honda special tool (but want a deposit of £70) which I'd recommend, because the one I made from the pattern in the Haynes turned out to be useless- it just bent.

Mind you, that's more a comment on the bits of old barbecue I made it from, to be fair. :D

That was what I was wondering, so it can't be the oil then :!:

I'd be inclinded to think it must be something to do with the slave cylinder piston and/or push rod, as Tony says the clutch has to fully engage immediately when you let the lever out.

There's a metal spacer attached to the front sprocket cover, it spaces the whole cover out a few mm, a bit of long shot I know, but I assume yours is still fitted :?:

not sure Chris, i have a coerce sproket cover fitted now, i keep the push rod clean as the chain flings lube over it and it gums up, but other than that there are no changes that i know of....other that the clutch internals

I would guess it's one that was difficult to fit on there.
As in "It didn't fit quite right so I coerced it on with a hammer" :biggrin :biggrin

Oops Kev, I forgot you have that Coerce front sprocket cover fitted now :!:

A bit of a pain I know, but may be (if you still have it) try the original cover to see if you still have the same problem :?:

That's definitely on my list of bits I want but don't need.
(but am going to get anyway :lol: )

Although it doesn't look too hard to make one from flat stock- might have a little go and see.

That might well be what's causing the clutch to slip slightly, especially if the spacer's not fitted.
