To Silence or not to Silence.

Post by veefour »

So if i were to replace the Viper cans which were fitted on my 98' VTR when i bought it with the original Silencers, apart from the relief to my ears ( & pleasing the neighbours at 5am start ups  ) would i notice any difference in performance / mpg etc. would it perhaps run more like Mr. Honda intended it to !
I admit it does sound nice with the Vipers on with the popping & spitting when rolling off etc. but to be honest i been there done that years ago ( have been known to hurtle round on early 250 strokers with racing expansion chambers on  ).
As far as i am aware there has been no other mods to jetting etc. & the mileage is a very low 12,000 mls. :)

To Silence or not to Silence.

Stick the stock exhausts on and then sell me the vipers lol
If it hasn't been jetted and still using standard air filter it should be fine

Maybe you need to seal the link pipe joints to stop the poping and banging. After start up I feel that the noise you put out is controlable. Check the removable baffles aint been cut down. Stick with the Vipers :biggrin

Couple of answers:
You can get dB killers for the vipers and they do make it a good bit quieter, but nowhere near the standard pipes.

The standard pipes are so quiet it almost spoils the bike, but if you were to fit them you would find a drop in mid and top end power, but it might feel smoother.

As for other things you might notice, I think it might use more fuel as it will run richer without the race cans.

Hope that helps

I have to disagree here. The standard pipes seemed to make the bike feel alot more lumpy due to the restrictivness & yes they also sound pants. If you have Viper cans try these first:

I put a set of standards back on for the MOT each year, and apart from the noise the thing I notice is that the footpegs vibrate a lot more with standard ones.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Tony, Have you asked the mot tester about the loud exhausts? Mine passed this week with my Remus cans fitted. They don't have any markings or 'not for road abuse' on them.

Veefour,

If your Vipers are anything like my Scorpions you'll definitely notice a difference. Going from free flowing cans to the rather restrictive Honda ones will be noticeable. My suggestion would be to try a standard pair of exhausts before you sell on the Vipers.

I had Vipers, took them off because on the ns they kept clunking the swing arm and had worn a bit away, plus the running was rough as dog poo. Re-fitted the standard, sound is nowhere near as good, running improved and performance is not as good, still fun though :D

I have vipers on mine now and with BMC filter and Stage1 DJ kit..........it pulls like a train :D,

It now runs slightly stronger than the same spec but debaffled stock pipes, and only ever had bad running when had K&N fitted

also no worry on clearance to swing arm with mine [but are oval].........had yours been dropped to bend them in?

Thanks very much but i have the original stock exhausts, just need to get some new seals & clamps before i try them ( the original clamps from David Silver seem a bit pricey though are there others i can use ! ).
