10w-30 JASO?

Post by Solarboy »

Hi all,
I've been away from the VTR scene for many years and when I last had one I used to get it serviced at the local dealers. I've now bought a 29 year old Storm with 35k on her and thought I'd change the oil myself. I went to the local dealer and asked them fir oil and they sold me Castro 10w-30 JASO.
Now looking at the manual (should have done that first)! It looks like this oil is not suitable. I have had a read through the forum for advice but I am still unsure. Can anyone help, please!!

Thanks for that. I wonder why a Honda dealership would sell me the 10w-30?

Because Honda started to use 10w30 instead of 10w40 few years ago and say it is applicable for older bikes too. I think you can use it, maybe it is better, but 10w40 is very well proven to use.

Then that's good enough for me. I'll swop it for 10w-40 semi. Cheers, James

it's just a thinner.oil, supposed to get to the head quicker on startup, performance engines use a 0 weight
If it aint broke, get your bloody hands off it!

I thought 10W30 and 10W40 are the same weight when cold (hence the 10) but 10W30 is thinner once warmed up, so not so good if you ride somewhere very hot but otherwise fine for these bikes?

Thanks guys, it will teach me to buy the oil and then look at the work shop manual! Lol I'll use the 10w40 and take the 30 back. I'd rather go with the manual and avoid a potential issue. This is my first post so all you help is really appreciated.

10w30 is thinner when engine is cold, see viscosity at 40 deg, however minimal pumping temperature is similar. For water cooled bikes, 10w30 should be ok at operating temperature. There is theory and some testing, that 10w30 is more robust under hard conditions, and keeps engine colder due to better flow. But as said, 10w40 is very well proven on bikes.

Right you are - should have done my research!

The OP shouldn't worry about using 10W30 unless he's riding in temps of 32ish degrees C or more - in the workshop manual Honda say:
