odd one,ignition key wont turn.

Post by Keef »

ok,so, went to start the VTR today, key wouldn't turn in the ignition switch.
went in ok,tried waggling bars, wiggling key etc,no joy, after ten mins turned on as normal, ran perfect.
initially felt like i'd got the wrong key.
Any way went to visit a mate 25 miles away, bike ran fine,no issues.
came to go home,same again,key no turney,WTF !
much cursing and wiggling, all good, off we went.
got home.liberal application of WD40 type stuff, seems ok now.
so do we think poss damp in ignition switch,as not used for few weeks, and it has been very damp and cold ?
or is there some common fault I don't know about ?

many thanks if anyone can be arsed to shed light.

One of mine has started being a bit sticky, worn key or worn lock...They are over 20 years old now.

Try a different key if you have one if it's better than the key your using at the mo get a spare cut from the better one.

As for the lock WD hasn't really got a lot of oil in it so something like 3in1 will be better... Or gun oil...Better still graphite powder as its a dry lube.

3in1 works very well and use lots of it turning the key through all the motions .

Having this issue with a 600 bandit and a zx6r. What i found was if i push the key forward towards the clock and turn it from this position it works fine. I've put it down to a worn barrel. Worth a try. Hope this helps.
