Part of the problem might be that I'm so pedantic about lubing my chain (gear oil after almost every ride) that in the 22,000 miles or so that my last chain lasted I only had to adjust it once, after the initial break-in! So those adjuster bolts have not seen much action at all.

I guess that, combined with the application of plentiful copper grease, it could be good to move them around a bit when the rear wheel comes out for brake maintenance, new tyre, bearings or whatever. One could turn them, say, a full turn each way and as long as you watched what you were doing you wouldn't change the alignment or chain tension.
