Engine knock

Post by Stey »

This is my first post, so thanks in advance for all information.
I recently bought a VTR with very very low miles, the bike had been stored for a long period.
The bike had a recent service and the carbs have been cleaned and balanced.
The bike has been running perfect.
However tonight I took it about 10 miles down the motorway, as I pulled off I heard a knocking sound.
The noise was from the top end, I thought the cams or tappets had gone or maybe starved of oil.
I took a slow route home and the bike rode faultless, and once home the knocking had stopped.
Would I need to take any action or do people feel it's ok to ride as normal.

Has it had manual cam chain tensioners or a stopper modification?
If on the originals it maybe that they are not self-adjusting consistently.
I take it that the oil level is ok?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

And where are you based? If you're near someone on here who knows these bikes well they might be able to have a look/listen to yours for you.
