Before I go and snap the thing off am I right in thinking this is a reverse threaded bolt (clockwise to undo) or have I just dreamed this?

just dreaming mate,anti clock to undo,as normal 8O

yes normal way to remove it, i use the airgun in work as its a bugger with a ratchet

If you have a breaker bar it will be much easier this is how i did mine incase you havnt got access to airgun

I agree, im changing mine at the mo and a normal wrench wont do it, you need as others have said at least a t-bar or some kind of air powered tool!
