Re: Airbox modding

Thanks for this
As usual, though, I'm left with more questions than answers.

1.- I'm wondering why the breathers from the cambox covers weren't piped to a separate reservoir? Seem the easiest solution to me, and does away with the plastic box, which doesn't serve any purpose beyond emissions regs.
Or am I missing something obvious?
2.- Do you know why the inlet carbon piece has such a large triangular part which drops down alongside the frame spar? I can't imagine what benefit this shape has over a smoother design- has it got a sticky pad in to trap dust and debris?
3.- Why is the inlet only on one side?

Looking at the one I've modified so far, I think that if the inlets are fitted to both sides, it should be possible to route them into the airbox through the triangular gaps at the front of the frame spars, the two just behind the headstock. I might have to move or remount a few things, but no biggie, by the looks of it.That's the next part of the game for mine, and if successful as it currently is when tested on the dyno (or at least doesn't lose any power or torque) then I'll be looking to use it as a mould to make a carbon fibre version, which can have the inlets added as I've outlined above.
My intention is to add a ram-air effect at higher speeds, as well as more volume and less clutter inside the box.

This feels like a sensible development, but as ever, the dyno will decide- or

1.it was done in this fashion as the one i had seen, had been done in this way.(therefore it must have worked)
2. no there are 2 carbon inlets to the airbox they just were not both in the picture
3. the large triangular piece is there i think to slow the air down( as a swirl pot ) and also as you say as a reservoir for debris / just no sticky pad
And you would have to make your own air filter to fit the end pieces to stop the odd pidgeon being sucked into the engine
you also need to re-position the expansion tank , i did this with an HRC plastic bottle that nestled nicely underneath cost me a tenner but just looked nicer ( im such a tart )..

Thanks again.
The two inlets makes more sense, and I hadb't thought of moving the coolant overflow tank, as I'm planning on using the standard airbox but with none of the internal pipes and bits, and with the corner projections removed.
So I'll still be able to use a standard (well, K&N) filter.

But the BMC looks like it would flow more air, so that might be the best choice- I wonder how I could test to see whether the K&N was allowing enough through?
As I haven't changed the bore, stroke or peak revs the engine should still require the same air throughput as a standard bike, I would have thought.

As for the HRC bottle, I might splash out on one of the Monster-branded plastic ones that the paper shop at the end of our road does, and as a bonus it comes filled with an energy drink that I could consume! (I'm such a cheapskate)..

I might have a play at the weekend, as it looks to be nice weather. No baseline dyno testing done yet, but a seat of the pants comparison of the modified airbox vs. the standard one should tell me if it'll offer any advantage.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Got myself a Pipercross filter today...see attched pic.

The Pipercross is NOT a "gauze" filter like the BMC, it is a "sponge" filter.

Will drop it in tomorrow and see what it does.

Guys go get a PiperCross Airfilter...

Since I installed this filter, the midrange flat spot is gone, the bike just pulls smooth and cleanly all the way to 9500...

The best the bike has ever felt since I bought it 3yrs ago.

I made no other changes, just the filter in place of the BMC filter.

which BMC part is it? they do a Road and a race version?

I had same good effect on the 5000rpm hole when I took the high flow K&N out and used the BMC road filter

according to the BMC website:
144/04 $108.46 HONDA VARADERO
144/04 $108.46 HONDA VTR 1000 F SUPER HAWK
144/04 RACE $115.68 HONDA VARADERO
144/04 RACE $115.68 HONDA VTR 1000 F SUPER HAWK

Not sure what difference race/standard but I know which one I'd buy!

the road filter flows a little less than a k&n but the race version is 40% more, according to bmc webby

apparently salt is a preservative, yet it rots bikes.

It may have been when you weren't viviting the forum Seb, but Gerrit had a big off at Kayalami and wrecked his bike, and himself to some extent, about 2 years ago now. I don't think he has been visiting that often since.
