I reckon I'll need to pull my starter then and clean it up and refit with some lubricant before I let it get to that stage. Although over here we do not have salt and stuff on our roads and don't get the wet weather you guys do, but still worth a check. I reckon we all should do it as a routine as I imagine it does not take that long to get it out (under an hr I would guess).

Thanks Brian for the heads up and

CONGRATS on a task well done
Cheers
Don

Congratulations Brian on a job well done. I have been following this thread with great interest and I am totally amazed at both the condition of your starter and the levels of corrosion you guys deal with over there. I guess I am spoiled because cars and bikes just do not rot away here like that.

Thank you all guys - it was a worrying time, but as per usual great support helps.

Hoping my dust seals arrive today then I can get all the rear suspension rebuilt, get my newly refurbished headers fitted (thanks mac) and then move onto the fitting of the manual cct s

Then my super new chain and sprockets

This is a massive learning curve but one which gas got me back on the spanners again

Who knows , I may ride the thing this summer !!!!!

Well done Brian, corrosion is a fecker on hard to get to places on the VTR I had agro with my linkage and Marty sorted my starter motor due to the nut corrosion.

Grease and lube is the trick, but don't do it when Lloydie is about

There we go !!!!!

The replacement starter turned up today, so I checked the contacts and they are great (came off a Firblade\), so I lubed the spigot and o ring, copper grease on the two studs and refitted. Then used a dollop of electrical grease on the contacts and used the replacement cover - job done !!!!
