Coolant Leak

Post by SILVTR »

I noticed a bit of a clear/greenish leak while fuelling up on my way into work this morning. Never noticed it before - nothing on shed floor, nor at parking spot in work. If sitting on the bike, it seems to be coming from the joint of the link hose between the two radiators, at the left radiator. I had no probs with overheating on my 22-mile commute in (some traffic filtering, some 100mph bursts, some fast & slow bends), so I don't think it's leaking too much - I'll check again in an hour or so. I'd like to think I may just have to tighten a jubilee clip or something, but might it be something worse? The cooling system was flushed and refilled 50/50 2500 miles ago, as part of the service done just before I bought it from the dealer. Any of you guys have any experience of this?

Leaking

I had a similar problem earlier this year on my f2 storm, as it was under warranty they asked me to take it back in to the dealers.
Turned out it was just the jubilee that needed to be tightened, same lhs radiator. Not been a problem since.

Mine only used to leak on tickover for some reason, never when it was just stood in the garage.

Best of luck

I checked the bike a couple of hours ago - no sign of any leak...

Thinking about it, I suspect that because metal expands when hot, and that I fuelled up barely a mile from my house, whatever pressure is in the coolant system might be enough to breach a miniscule gap at the join.

Then, once the metal of the hose coupling/joint/ferrule/manifold or whatever it's called had heated up during my commute, that gap was closed off, hence no leak. Logic or tosh?

I usually fuel up on my way home, so obviously things would be hot & sealed. Usually I head straight from home into work - no chance for me to spot any leak - I'll check at the traffic lights leaving my job this evening.

Where's the coolant reservoir? I guess I should check that too...

I had a similar problem, it was a loose fastener. Tightened it up and the leak stopped.

You can't miss the coolant resevoir, its the white bottle on the rhs of the bike, directly opposite the choke. The one that says 'Collant' on the lid.....

Tighten up all the jubilee's and the problem might go away

Look dirctly under the tank you will see a small coolant resevoir. If your coolant is coming out on the left side when on the stand, it is most likely coming from this resevoir. It is a pain. There is a small hose connected to a nipple at the bottom of the tank. It leaks where the hose is on the nipple. I have to take the hose off and get a better hose clamp and tighten it well. It can be a long painful job but it will stop the leak.
