Hoping to replace my Shoei, but.........

Post by sirch345 »

I need to replace my old Shoei helmet, but it seems the latest Shoei's are made in a smaller size than they use to be :!: Either that or my head has got even bigger

Any suggestions of a different manufacturer for a crash helmet for my big head :?: I'm sure I can't be the only one who has this problem

Here's hoping :D

Can't help on the head size, but I have used a Roof for several years and they are so much quieter and better than the Shoei I used to have. Quite light and cheap too around £200.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Arai
make two different shape shells. One is, how can we put this politely, for the more fuller, rounder head and the other is more elliptical (for the pin heads out there  )
I've also had very good service out of Nolan and at present I'm liking the HJC brand.
My main advise for anyone is get an approved lid and buy for the best fit and not the name. An ill fitting £500 Shoei is more dangerous than a properly fitted budget lid in my book.

I've just bought a Shoe Raid II to replace the one I damaged.

Its a little bit tighter, but I think thats because the lining is new and hasn't been compressed by my head yet!
She's my idea of beauty and thats what I ride.

I have 2 different lids, a craft one which is very snug but quite a lot of wind noise, i have a nitro one which i have to say fits perfectly and less wind noise. I dont have a small head yet its only a medium so i think a xl will fit the biggest of heeeeeeeds! (unless yours is proper massive of course)

I have a fairly big noggin and for years I thought helmets were SUPPOSED to be uncomfortable.

Then I tried my first Arai, just the entry-level Condor, £199.

It was like laying my head on a pillow. Recommended.
There's nothing nice in my head, the adult world took it all away

I must admit Paul, I liked the look of the Roof helmets when they came out first, I remember looking at them at the NEC. Interesting about them being quieter than the Shoei, another good point to consider IMHO.

I see Timbo, FirestormMike, bigrich and blindmaninchains all rate the Arai's :!:
I always thought the rule-of-thumb was you either have a Shoei or an Arai shaped head :?:

Talking about two different shape shells Pete, you've reminded me that someone said a long time ago that FM used two different sized shells, which definitely helped for the person with the larger head :!:

Funny you should mention the Nolan brand, as I had only just been looking at them in the Hein Gericke catalogue. The HJC brand seems to have come on a long way since they were first on the market.

Good advice your last sentence :!:

I made the mistake of listening to the salesman when I purchased the Shoei I have at the moment. He had been struggling to find one that fitted me and of course told me "it's bound to be tight to start with, but it will bed in with time :!: " Although I realise they do bed in a little it was never a enough, I nearly always ended up with a headache when wearing it. So this time it's got to feel right from the go, bearing in mind it will only bed in a little :!:
