generator center cap removal.

Post by firestarter1977 »

hi all. I think its the generator cap. But the cap thats needed to turn the engine over for setting the timing marks for cct removal is solid. The smaller of the two is free. Whats the best solution to getting it removed. Are the cases magnesium? Dont thing impact driver will be a good option lol. I have put plenty of wd40 on it . But its not moved as yet.

Also what plug spanner fits the storm as i dont have the tool kit. I do have a long reach one for the rotax that may fit ?

Cheers guys

You could try warming it but not too much (Small fan heater maybe better than a blow torch?)

I used a long ally allen key, i wouldn't like to try the impact method !

I had to modify a tool that came with the bike for the plug spanner, the head need is 18/19mm, i'll try and find the post on here for the proper Honda tool

The problem with that center cap people intend to over tighten it, me included. That and the fact it's made from cheese is a bad combination

Some on here have drilled two holes in it to take a two pinned spanner that is normally used for changing disc's on an angle grinder.

I ended up giving it a sharp tap with a cold chisel and that was all it took to loosen it. I then cut a slot across the face of it once removed, made a tool to fit that slot, a piece of mild steel about 4mm thick and cut to the width of the cap head. I then welded that to an old socket.

I also picked up a new alternator cover complete with said cap from ebay for little more than a new cap from Honda. I'm still using the modified cap at the moment, but if I ever want to fit the new one it's there waiting.

As Chris said, made of cheese. I used a centre punch to screw it off. Quite why it is made of such soft metal is a mystery to me. Grinding in a cross hatch for the future seems like a good idea, or buy a new one each time.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Copaslip helps, I find.

But mine's still got the four centre punch marks on it, from where I got arsey with it a year or so back...
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
