Starting Problems

Hi all,

long time no post

I'm having problems starting my firestorm

Basically it is turning over but wont kick off, battery is fine.

Last time I went out was xmas eve and prior to that it had been a bit difficult to start but would eventually get going, I'm thinking it may be fuel related but thought I'd ask what may be the first things to check

check your choke operation

to start mine id
twist throttle a couple of times
press starter let it try a couple of times
then
half pull out choke no throttle
press starter and bingo it would fire up

Check the big starter cable running from the solenoid under the seat surround plastic to the starter motor.

Where it terminates in a washer-like connection which bolts on to the starter motor, the cable rots due to salt etc and can't carry the current.

It'll turn over, but slower than normal, and not quite enough to fire.

There's been some threads before on this- worth a search.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Don't use any choke, turn her over a couple of times. Then turn her over whilst pulling out the choke bit by bit till she fires.

Otherwise quite easy to flood then its a real mare
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Thanks fot the replies folks

It aint the battery as it's brand new, plus,
I put the battry off my r1 (that fires up ok) and it still would not go, nearly, but no

I shall have a look at all the suggestions made

It takes more amps to turn two pint sized cylinders rather than 4 little 'uns. but that seems not to be the issue.

I start mine full choke from the off, very little throttle, if any.

You haven't been doing any work on it? Tank off at all?

Fuel, Air, Spark workout which one/s you don't have and go from there.

Ok

Turns out that the new battery my mate got me twas a bit shagged and not putting out quite enough juice to turn the monster over

New battery (again) on couple of strokes and away she goes

I've said it before and I'm going to say it again :)

IMHO your better off spending that bit extra and buying an OE (original equipment) battery a Yuasa :!:
Cheaper batteries show up their true colours when the winter comes around, plus because a Yuasa lasts longer you actually save money in the long term :!:

Good advice I think. A yuasa is about 45GBP. THere are those oddysey batteries which are 80-90GBP...

Are they worth the extra?

Picked up a cheapie a year or so back, and it's fine.

No Optimate or similar, but I use it pretty much every day, so it never leaks the charge away.

IMO it's how long you leave batteries between cycles that kills them, sulpahting I think it's called.

Yeah I have been told the same thing down in NZ as well... Basically I've been told if you don't ride your bike for about three days your battery is heading for the cemetery, unless you keep it charging all the time.

I admit our climate is very hard on batteries though.

Where did you see Yuasa batteries for around £45 :?: as that is a very good price. Wemoto is the best price I've come across and that's at £57.50 + delivery.

I've heard about Odssey batteries before, but having a look for an exact price for the Firestorm, they don't seem to list them :!: They obviously are a better battery, but as you say cost a lot more too :!:

I agree with that :!: The battery in my old Suzuki GSThou that was used everyday lasted for 8yrs :!:
