Yes.
Yes.
And Yes.

Most people on the forum rate the manual CCT's such as APE ones from the states, or make their own version. Just search for thread with the word "CCT" or Tensioner" in the search box above.

There's also a great sticky above this post which tells you how to fit them.

Apparently you sometimes get a rumble before they go, mine have gone twice now and I never heard a thing. (The straight-through carbon race cans might have something to do with this).

Doesn't seem to matter what colour spot they have on them.

It's usually the front one that goes, allowing the exhaust cam to jump a couple of teeth or more which lets the exhaust valves become acquainted with the piston.

Not a hard job to fix, rare that the piston is damaged and all you need is a head gasket, new CCT's, a pair of exhaust valves and a few hours work. The first time it'll take you all weekend, you get better with practice, especially if you have an assortment of spare shims.

If any of this doesn't make sense, you probably aren't mechanically inclined to get down and greasy with your bike engine, and so it's best done by a workshop.

But Yes, they need changing. :!:

Yes! Change them!

I've had x1 front one go... & the current front is on the way out too !!!
Am fitting manual ones ASAP for piece of mind !!

Standard ones cost £29 + VAT from davidsilvers I think.
APE manual ones cost a bit more... get them from the USA on ebay.

Fitting them, is easy enough, even if your not that mechanically minded... just follow the excellent advice in the sticky at the top of this forum as tony.mon said.

Im thinking about some APE tensioners now too.

I have a bit chain rattle just above idle. Was gonna buy OE tensioners, but might aswell go the APE route if im honest.

Step dads a cnc machinist, reckon he could modify a set of OE ones?

Cheers

Change them before they go. I have a 1997 yellow VTR as well, my front CCT went at 41,000km, no warning. I was lucky however and there was no damage. The stock units are crap and the replacements are said to be just as bad...letting go anywhere between 5-50,000 km... I've gone with the APE's they would be no hassle to fit, (even easier if you have small hands).

The bike runs better for it as well

Oh, one more thing, trust the info in the sticky above and don't just rely on the Haynes version :!:

It's not very helpful (Haynes that is).
