possible carb loading ??

Post by X2K »

I am new to owning a V-Twin so i am unsure of what is regular. I bought the bike a few weeks ago with 14k on it. Its stock except for Yosh pipes. When i bought it, it seemed fine ran well but now it seems that maybe the carbs are loading? maybe too much fuel and running too rich? When i back off the throttle on the highway it backfires, and at night sometimes will shoot a 1ft flame out the rear. ( which looks cool, but not that good.) Possible my carbs are out of adjustment?

The other problem i have it that the bike is liquid cooled, so there should be no overheating in traffic or just sitting. correct? I was on the highway with about 75 other bikes yesterday and in traffic. it was only about 70 degrees out. And the bike was almost in the red. Just about borderline and it stayed there until i got to some open road to cool her off. Is that supposed to happen?

Thanks for your help,
Chuck.

Nope it's not supposed to do that, I had a similar problem after fitting aftermarket pipes, on the overrun lots of banging and popping with the occasional big backfire, a much faster warm up and running hot. It all points to lean running, either get a dyno kit to sort out the mixture before you melt something or bung the standard pipes back on.

It's worth getting a dyno run when you have a kit fitted , as this will sort out all your fueling probs.

Good luck
