japandy
this is only my findings on the cct front.
when i got my storm i new about the cct prob and decided to look into it in detail, i read many posts on here all of which seemed a little confusing. so i got a used one off tony.mon ( and a bent valve for free lol ) to strip down and see how it all works.
from what i could see its a simple device that can only apply tension to the chain, it cannot retract as its under constant spring pressure that is always trying to take slack out of the cam chain.
it is only when the spring snaps that engine vibration can allow the worm to rotate and allow the plunger to retract.
i couldnt find this info until i stripped one.
i decided the mod that sirch345 had come up with to be the best solution as it will still allow the chain to tension with wear and if the spring snaps it can only retract 1mm ish which isnt enough for the chain to jump teeth.
i thought the manual ones would be good but i was unsure how to set the correct tension and believe it needs to be right or it rattles or is down on power when too tight.
only my findings fella , and this mod costs some time and
some 8mm rod.
just my 2 cents

Seems you got the same "free gift" as i got from Tony.mon, ie the bent valve..nowt like giving somebody nightmares

I would agree after actually seeing a cct stripped down, that Chris's (Sirch345) modification is the route to go down, infact i was in B&Q today ,and see they sell both solid and hollow alluminium rod in short lengths,(to take up the space between the end of the worm drive and the plunger)

If i get round to modify my standard cct's in any way, that'll be the way i'll be doing it

Re: converted cct's?
ha ha ha yeah the valve made me get the mod done and out of the way! I just used a 8mm bolt cut down to the correct length. I filed it down square until it didnt rattle when the head was replaced. I dont think the weight difference will make any difference between alloy and mild steel.
I imagine that the spacer will need to be remade at set intervals as the chain wears incase the spring snaps.
Out of all the mods this seemed to make the most sense to me

Well i'm totally baffled now !
I was going to get a set of Apes until i've seen the fixed modification with coach bolts to a standard CCT
And now there's this semi sprung version . . .
I need a lie down . . . sorry

Re: converted cct's?
thats how i felt guys.
i had to have one in my hand to strip and see how it works,
i aint a mechanic but i am a mechanical engineer to a point and the mod mentioned seemed to be the best bet for me.
that dont mean it will suit everyone tho. all i thought was this way it retains the self adjusting properties but wont allow the plunger that tensions the cam chain to retract when the spring breaks.
i am interested as to where the spring actually breaks tho, i imagine it to be the tang that fits into the worm drive ?
its your choice fella , i just thought i would tell my tale as it may save you some cash on the apes.
EDIT:
i should have said this is a mod to the standard cct and it will still work in the manner it was designed, and only requires some 8 dia rod , a 3mm pin punch and a vernier. and some time.

Has anyone got a link to the exact mod or a link to any pictures or diagrams. ?firestarter1977 wrote:thats how i felt guys.

You're right Mark that's exactly where it does breakfirestarter1977 wrote: i am interested as to where the spring actually breaks tho, i imagine it to be the tang that fits into the worm drive ?

Chris.
PS. I came up with this idea (as did Del (delmeekc) about the same time) because (as Mark (Firestarter1977) said) it gives IMO the best of both. It takes the guess work out of setting up a fixed CCT such as an Ape tensioner, and it can still operate as Mr Honda intended. If the spring should fail with this modification it cannot back off enough to cause further damage

Which option you decided to go for is your choice.
PPS. Very good advice, to get hold of an old CCT to study before you decide.

But that's just one of three pairs of bent valves- both front exhausts every bloody time...
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
