Starting problem 2
Re: Starting problem 2
Hi Mate,
Mine is a sod to start as well.
Try this, turn it over with full choke for a few turns, turn choke off, turn throttle just a little, press starter and open throttle just a touch as it fires. If you dont catch it try again. The key to this is getting it going before the battery goes flat, I have also tried starting with the optimate connected which seems to help, sometimes. But sometimes it will fire up on full choke immediately, seems to depend on the prevailing weather conditions.

Re: Starting problem 2
Well, I'm getting somewhere I think
Its defo in the ignition system as I've now got no spark to the plugs
As yet I have checked the following
1. Side stand swith ok
2. Starter switch ok
3. Ignition swith ok
All are working normally and getting a supply
Now, I checked the supply into the ICM and converter unit which is as should be HOWEVER there is very little volts getting to the coils 2-3volts in fact but my workshop manual says there should be 100v peak voltage, also 0.7v peak voltage out of the converter unit for the inpuls generator and it is only reading 0.2v
I am going to lend these 2 units off me mate and try them

Swapped the ICM and converter for a couple of working ones and still the same no spark at the plugrobvtr wrote:Well, I'm getting somewhere I think![]()

I think the only thing left to try is the impulse generator, anyone had experience of this fooking up

Re: Starting problem 2
Iirc I've not heard of the Ignition Pulse Generator causing any problems on a Firestorm before
Going by your results I'd say you're going to have to change that to find out for sure.
I look forward too hearing the outcome.
Good luck with it,
Chris.

I get the feeling it is something totally fooking stupid and I am gonna kick meself when I get it sorted

Okay,
I haven't read back through the posts in a while but I have heard of a couple of coils braking down and HT caps going if that's any help.

Have tried a mates coils on Pete, still no sparkPete.L wrote:Okay,

Re: Starting problem 2
how are you checking for spark?
1998 Firestorm, 47,000 miles, forks valved & sprung, proflex shock +4mm over standard, manual ccts', k&n, 50#slow 185#/190# mains, front carb slide mod, R6 throttle tube, Tank raised, Viper cans, Coerce fork brace, EBC lite front discs & pads.
Re: Starting problem 2
By cranking the engine whilst holding the plug against the chasis and there is fookallstormingjoe wrote:how are you checking for spark?

Re: Starting problem 2
better of using a spark breakout as you could blow the coils and electronic module with feedback, another thing by cranking you could deprive the ignition of enough voltage to give a spark use a jumper battery preferably a good car one with a set of decent jump leads. recheck your resistances on the leads and coils if you have a motorist multimeter you may be able to check the pulse from the pulse generator too, check your plug caps as well they have a resistor in, again check all the wiring and earth points. has the bike got an immobiliser worth checking.

Re: Starting problem 2
Well I still aint got it going, still no spark
Checked all me connections
Borrowed and swapped over the coils, ICM, converter unit
Checked the kill switch, all fuses, ignition switch, sidestand switch, nuetral switch
Its really p***ing me off
Help

Re: Starting problem 2
have you checked for continuity using multi meter, resistances and pulse generator? can only take one little wire to cause problems!

Also make sure all the earth connections are good

Re: Starting problem 2
First thing to do is to test for power at the coils
With the ignition on the and using a multimeter
Check the green wires have 12v supply to them
(the coils work by creating a field from the primary wind to the secondary wind with the power connected disconnect the power and the field collapses and discharges its stored power to the spark plugs) so no power no spark
if there’s no power at the green wire start working back to the ignition switch to fined were the power stops
let us know when you have checked them before we start getting in to checking components
