Battery charging with alarm fitted
Battery charging with alarm fitted
Hi.
I have a datatool (I think) alarm. Battery needs charging - can I just disconnect, take out , charge and replace battery as normal or is there a sequence I need to follow?
Thanks.

Re: Battery charging with alarm fitted
Hi birdy,
You can fit a permanent battery charging lead to the terminals of the battery, which will then connect to an optimate, so you don't have to take the battery off the bike to charge it.
However, if you do take the battery off the bike, you MUST put the alarm into maintainance mode; otherwise it could screw up the alarm's settings.
IMO an optimate with a weather proof lead connected to the bike is worth its weight in gold!
Hope this helps, have got lots of leads if you need one.
Chris.

Re: Battery charging with alarm fitted
I will second that, fit an optimate. Doesnt matter what make and model the Halfords one is cheap and does the job.

Thanks for the replies.
Do I just connect up the charger terminals if I leave the battery on the bike then? Is it as simple as that orwill the alarm go mad?
If I need to go to maintainance mode how do I do that?
Thanks again.

Re: Battery charging with alarm fitted
On most datatool alarms to put it into valet mode you need to switch on ignition and press the other button on the fob
You know it will be in valet mode, by a chripping sound every 5/10 seconds
Hope this helps ?

back again, i meant to say the alarm needs to go into valet/maintainence mode BEFORE you undo the terminals to remove the battery off the bike, or to fit the permanent lead for the optimate/charger.
Hope this is of some help!!

Re: Battery charging with alarm fitted
Hi.
My alarm 'key' doesn't have any buttons- it's just a sort of circle that fits into a 'female' circle on the bike...hard to explain. This seems to indicate it's not a datatool I guess. I'm not with the bike at the moment.
Given that there is no option I suppose I just need to disable the alarm i.e. as if I'm about to ride it - then switch off but don't set the alarm- THEN disconnect the battery?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Battery charging with alarm fitted
It sounds like you've got the type of fob that look like an immobiliser!!
I should do what you have said, just disconnect the battery without setting the alarm first, it sounds ok to me.
When you do take the battery off, the alarm may go off for a bit, but should stop sounding soon.
What sort of charger have you got?
Chris.

Re: Battery charging with alarm fitted
I used to have a Meta alarm/immobiliser on mine and I just used to connect the Optimate up then arm the alarm without any probs. Same goes for my TDM.
Stripped out the alarm from the Storm after it died completely a couple of years ago and immobilised everything a day before I was going to Wales. I suppose I should be glad it didn't do it when I was there!

I live just outside at Taverham. I have a mate who lives on the Heartsease - round the corner from the pub where someone got stabbed a couple of Christmases ago
