hi ya, i changed my oil about a month ago and it is already black, it has not lost any just turned black.
is it the type of oil or the filter i'm using...the filter is a hi-lo and the oil is rock oil 10/40, it has covered about 600 miles since oil and filter change......any ideas?????
dirty oil
Re: dirty oil
I wouldn't expect it to go very black so quickly but I'd start thinking the simply things first.
Did you get all the old oill out? Obviously that would make it dirty quickly.
I think Filters are pretty much the same, I use standard ones on my firstorms, infact I have a Yamaha one on my track bike, it's apparrently the same but prefer K&N simply as they have a drilled hole for lock wire. They are not expensive so stick to OE filters is good advice.
Maybe Rock Oil isn't the best to use? I don't know it, is it semi synthetic/synthetic or is it completely different stuff? I used Silkolene/Fuchs semi synth (I think) but it doesn't really matter, it's the changes 2-3K miles that count.
After all the above, I'd check the state of your spark plugs. The only other things could be that it is running so rich that it is making the oil sooty. You would have noticed this though by a petrol smell and low mpg.

No bike (yet).
Re: dirty oil
I use Castrol GP semi synth. It is red and stays red in the sight window for several thouand miles.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Re: dirty oil
i left the bike over night draining so i think all the old oil came out, the oil is semi-synthetic, what is a good oil and is 10/40 o.k........cheersgilson wrote:I wouldn't expect it to go very black so quickly but I'd start thinking the simply things first.

Re: dirty oil
SAE 10W/40 oil with a API classification SE, SF or SG is what's recommended. The majority use semi-synthetic including me. If the bike is new to you it's possible that it didn't get new oil and filter change at the correct service mileages. If you change the oil and filter at the correct times from now on, you'll probably find it will take longer each time for the oil to go black.
As for oil filters, I like to stick to a genuine Honda item.
Some will probably recommend an engine flush, but IMHO I don't like using them, as there's places in the engine that will hold up some of the flush. That will then be mixed in with your new oil and stay there until the next oil change, which can not be good for engine longevity
