engine

Post by mark skett »

finally got me storm back on the road after fitting a new engine.
mine is an 02 model but the engine i fitted was off an 97 limited edition model.
does anyone know if there is any difference between them because the new engine seems a lot faster than the original one.
i have been told that it was tuned up slightly more than standard.
thanks

Hi Mark

I think the earlier ones were a bit more powerful. Not that Honda said so.
I've heard that the larger tank on the newer models reduced the size of the air box (could all be bollox of course).
She's my idea of beauty and thats what I ride.

Earlier engines put out around 110 bhp, later ones (which had inlet restrictors) put out about 98 bhp. Top speed for earlier ones about 155, later ones 143.

Why? No idea!
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Seriously though I was always under the same impression as Jaglifter. The (UK) earlier models with the smaller 16ltr fuel tank had bigger air boxes than the later models with the 19ltr fuel tank. If you look at road tests carried out some years ago in bike magazines, the earlier models produced around 105bhp where as the later models around 99/100bhp

thanks
mine has the smaller tank and i had 162ish out of her until i got her jetted and put k&n filter and art cans on. she sounds brilliant but top speed dropped a little but the take off was a lot quicker. not had her to full throttle yet but the bottom end is a lot quicker than the last engine.
and yeah it is the engine i got of ebay a real bargain
cheers

Did the newer engine come with a front sprocket already on it? If you left it on it might have one tooth less, accounting for the better bottom end and reduced top speed.

no i used the same sprocket as before.
the top speed dropped after i had the original engine jetted but the bottom end was quicker.
but the replacement engine seems even quicker at bottom end but not had her to top speed yet.
gonna wait for a nice clear dry day for that lol

Watch out for the puritan vegetable folk that will try to lock you up for having fun! 161mph would probably get you 10 mins in the electric chair, unless you happened to be a well known footballer in a Porsche 911. :x
