New bikes (well, new to me)

Post by tony.mon »

As I now have some time on my hands I thought I'd see if I could get a cheap project bike to play around with.

So I stuck an ad on the local Freecycle board, and have now collected:

Kwak ZZR600, put away running in 1999 and not started since, complete with full Givi set and Datatool alarm)- Front calipers need replacing, carbs cleaning out, new battery and tyres, then we'll see if she runs-

Honda XBR 500 single cafe racer, with a broken engine- maybe dropped valve? I'll know when I strip it down. But it's clean and shiny, and rust-free. Well, it is a Honda!

Honda VT250. Now this one's a wreck, to be fair, the exhausts rotted and it failed its MOT in 2000 and it's been left in the garden ever since. The engine's likely to still be ok, and the Comstar wheels/forks (Air assisted! whoever thought of that idea?) and so I'll sell the bits and/or break the engine to buy bits for the others.

These are gonna make a great summer holiday project for my 14yo daughter, who's dead keen on bikes. She's already trying to find out how to get a 33bhp kit for the Kwak.

And all three for nothing- can't beat it really.

But it goes to show, they're all out there, if you look hard enough.

(My next ad will mention Vincents :D )
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

No, still cleaning them first!
Anyway, I haven't even posted the Storm pics yet- still waiting for the tyres to go back on the newly powdered wheels, and then I'll get all artisitic.

Anyone know how to Photoshop grime, age and crash damage off a bike?

(everyone who advertises in MCN seems to know how  )

And as for space, I'm having to E-bay my rotovator and a spare stainless half- oildrum barbecue to make room in the garage and shed.

I feel the need for another shed coming on.....

Always liked the XBR500, althought the import version looked better oddly called the GB500??? it had spoked wheels as opposed to the alloy ones on the official uk version.
take a look !!!

Now that sounds like fun! :D
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Funny you should mention that, it occurred to me too.
I worked as a wheelbuilder for a while, for Hagons, and so if I can get the hubs I can drop some nice shiny ally rims on it (Borrani or similar- pain to keep clean but they look the biz IMO).

Always fancied doing the cafe racer conversion to an XL500 or similar.....never quite found the time and money together.

And mwross, if you put your Storm on Freecycle it might be worth a day trip up to collect it- I'm first in queue, lads, no pushing at the back. :D
But I hope you get it sorted.

Dommie engine apparently drops straight in the XBR frame, too- now there's a thought :D
