Drive Sprocket Play - Is it normal?

Hi All,

Been refreshing my VTR over the last couple of months, changing worn out bits, that kind of thing and one of my tasks was to fit a new set of Renthal Chain & Sprockets.

When I fitted the drive sprocket, I torqued up the bolt as per the workshop manual (53NM I think), but noticed there's still some sideways float between the sprocket and the washer, i.e the sprocket can move about 0.5mm on the shaft and therefore isn't held tight by the bolt / washer.

My question - Is this normal ?

Any help would be appreciated, my mileage is just short of 60,000...

I would say that your cush drive rubber is worn if you search there there are some threads explaining a quick fix using a ice cream carton or a new one from David Silver is only about £25 i think.

It's the gearbox drive sprocket, not the rear sprocket that I have the issue with, but thanks for your reply..

Ok if its the gearbox sprocket i believe that there is some play in it when tightened down iirc mine had play in it when tightened. Think this is quite normal.

Thanks Steve, wasn't sure if the mileage had caused wear or if it was normally like this. You've put my mind at rest, so now I can carry on with the job.

Yeah, I was worried that I kept wanting to play with my drive sprocket.


Apparently it's normal, though.

Not sure I'm ready for normal quite yet.
